Having a lot of RES Shred in Genshin Impact is not completely wasted, even if an enemy’s Resistance has already fallen below 0%.
However, additional RES Shred becomes less effective once RES turns negative. This means there can be a point where adding another source of RES Shred gives your team less value than using a different buff, debuff, or damage source instead.
When Does RES Shred Start Losing Value?
RES Shred is especially valuable while reducing an enemy’s positive Resistance toward 0%.
For most enemies, 10% is a common base RES value.
Suppose an enemy starts with 10% RES.
Reducing that RES from:
10% → 0%
changes the RES multiplier from:
0.90× → 1.00×
But if you continue reducing RES below zero, the formula changes.
At negative RES, the RES multiplier is:
1 − (RES ÷ 2)
This means the portion of RES below 0% effectively contributes at half strength.
Does Extra RES Shred Still Increase Damage Below 0%?
Yes.
Negative RES still increases the damage an enemy takes.
For example:
| Enemy RES | RES Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 10% | 0.90× |
| 0% | 1.00× |
| −10% | 1.05× |
| −20% | 1.10× |
| −30% | 1.15× |
| −40% | 1.20× |
So pushing an enemy from 0% to −20% RES still improves the RES multiplier from 1.00× to 1.10×.
The extra RES Shred is therefore not wasted.
It simply provides less benefit per percentage point once the enemy is already below zero.
For a detailed explanation of negative RES, see Can Enemy RES Go Below 0% in Genshin Impact? What Happens to RES Shred?
Why Can Stacking Too Much RES Shred Be Inefficient?
The main issue is opportunity cost.
Imagine your team already has enough RES Shred to push an enemy well below 0%.
Adding another RES Shred source can still increase damage, but because negative RES has reduced effectiveness, that additional source may provide a relatively small improvement.
Meanwhile, another character, Artifact set, or team effect might provide something different, such as:
- ATK or another relevant scaling stat
- DMG Bonus
- Elemental Mastery
- DEF reduction or DEF Ignore
- Energy support
- Off-field damage
- Reaction support
- Survivability or interruption resistance
So the question is not simply:
“Does more RES Shred work?”
It does.
The better question is:
“Is another RES Shred source more valuable than the alternative I could use instead?”
Example: Stacking RES Shred on a 10% RES Enemy
Consider an enemy with 10% RES.
Without RES Shred:
10% RES → 0.90× RES multiplier
With 20% RES Shred:
−10% RES → 1.05×
With 40% RES Shred:
−30% RES → 1.15×
With 60% RES Shred:
−50% RES → 1.25×
Damage continues increasing as more RES Shred is applied.
But notice what happens after the enemy crosses 0%.
Every additional 20 percentage points of RES Shred only adds 0.10 to the RES multiplier while the target remains below 0%.
That’s the diminishing effectiveness that makes excessive RES Shred less attractive in some teams.
Is More RES Shred Better Against High-RES Enemies?
It can be much more valuable.
Not every enemy starts with only 10% Resistance. Some enemies have much higher Resistance to particular damage types.
Against a high-RES enemy, a larger amount of RES Shred may still be reducing positive Resistance instead of pushing an already-low value further negative.
In those situations, stacking multiple compatible RES Shred sources can be much more useful.
This is why you should not decide that a certain amount of RES Shred is universally “too much.”
The enemy’s starting RES matters.
Should You Avoid Using Two RES Shred Sources Together?
No.
Two RES Shred sources can still be very useful together.
For example, KQM notes that Zhongli’s RES Shred can work alongside other RES reduction, but also points out that RES Shred below 0% has reduced effectiveness.
The same principle applies more generally: stacking compatible RES Shred effects is not inherently bad.
Instead, consider:
- How much RES the enemy starts with
- How much RES Shred your team already applies
- Whether the effects apply to your main damage type
- How consistently each effect can be maintained
- What you would gain by using a different character or support effect instead
If you’re unsure whether the RES Shred effects themselves can combine, see Does RES Shred Stack in Genshin Impact?
Is There a RES Shred Cap?
The important practical breakpoint is 0% RES, but it is not a hard cap.
Enemy RES can go below zero, and additional RES Shred can continue increasing damage.
What changes at 0% is the formula.
Below zero, the negative RES portion effectively contributes at half strength to the RES multiplier.
So instead of thinking:
“Anything past 0% is wasted.”
think:
“Anything past 0% still works, but less efficiently.”
When Is Another RES Shred Source Probably Less Valuable?
There is no single percentage that applies to every team.
However, another RES Shred source becomes less attractive when:
- The enemy is already well below 0% RES
- Your team already has reliable RES Shred
- The new source does not offer much else
- Another character could provide a strong independent buff or significant personal damage
- The additional RES Shred has poor uptime or difficult activation requirements
This trade-off appears in actual team-building analysis as well. KQM, for example, notes cases where stacking many Physical RES Shred sources produces progressively smaller effective DPS gains after enemy RES becomes negative, making other team contributions potentially more valuable.
So, Is Too Much RES Shred a Waste?
No, but it can become inefficient.
Additional RES Shred continues to work even when enemy Resistance is below 0%, so there is no simple point where all further RES reduction becomes useless.
However:
- RES Shred is generally more effective while reducing positive RES.
- Negative RES still increases damage.
- RES reduction below 0% has reduced effectiveness.
- High-RES enemies can make additional RES Shred considerably more valuable.
- Team-building opportunity cost matters.
So if your team already pushes an enemy far below 0% RES, don’t automatically assume that adding even more RES Shred is the recommended choice.
Sometimes it will be.
Sometimes a different buff, debuff, support effect, or additional source of damage will improve the team more.
