RES Shred can increase your damage in Genshin Impact, but 20% RES Shred does not automatically mean 20% more damage.
The actual increase depends on the enemy’s starting Resistance, how much RES Shred is applied, and whether the enemy’s RES stays above or falls below 0%.
This is why the same amount of RES Shred can produce different damage gains against different enemies.
Why Doesn’t 20% RES Shred Mean 20% More Damage?
RES Shred does not directly add a percentage to your damage.
Instead, it lowers the enemy’s Resistance, which changes the RES multiplier used in the damage calculation.
For enemy RES between 0% and 75%, the multiplier is:
RES Multiplier = 1 − RES
For example, an enemy with 10% RES has:
1 − 0.10 = 0.90×
That means the RES portion of the damage calculation multiplies your damage by 0.90.
If RES Shred lowers that Resistance, the multiplier changes and your resulting damage increases.
How Much Damage Does 20% RES Shred Add Against 10% RES?
Let’s use an enemy with 10% starting RES.
Before RES Shred:
10% RES → 0.90× RES multiplier
Now apply 20% RES Shred:
10% − 20% = −10% RES
Once RES falls below 0%, negative RES uses a different formula:
RES Multiplier = 1 − (RES ÷ 2)
At −10% RES:
1 − (−0.10 ÷ 2) = 1.05×
So the multiplier changes from:
0.90× → 1.05×
To find the relative damage increase:
1.05 ÷ 0.90 ≈ 1.167
That means 20% RES Shred against an enemy starting at 10% RES produces approximately a 16.7% damage increase from the change in the RES multiplier, assuming everything else stays the same.
So:
20% RES Shred ≠ 20% more damage
In this example, it is about 16.7% more damage.
How Much Damage Does 40% RES Shred Add?
Now use the same enemy with 10% starting RES, but apply 40% RES Shred.
The enemy’s RES becomes:
10% − 40% = −30%
At −30% RES, the multiplier is:
1 − (−0.30 ÷ 2) = 1.15×
Before RES Shred, the multiplier was 0.90×.
After 40% RES Shred, it is 1.15×.
1.15 ÷ 0.90 ≈ 1.278
So the relative damage increase is approximately 27.8%.
Again:
40% RES Shred does not mean 40% more damage.
Against this particular enemy, it produces about 27.8% more damage from the RES multiplier.
RES Shred Damage Increase Against a 10% RES Enemy
Here’s a simple comparison:
| RES Shred | Final RES | RES Multiplier | Damage Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | 10% | 0.90× | — |
| 10% | 0% | 1.00× | 11.1% |
| 20% | −10% | 1.05× | 16.7% |
| 30% | −20% | 1.10× | 22.2% |
| 40% | −30% | 1.15× | 27.8% |
| 60% | −50% | 1.25× | 38.9% |
These numbers assume that everything except the enemy’s RES multiplier remains unchanged.
They are not universal damage increases for every enemy or every team.
Why Does the Enemy’s Starting RES Matter?
Because the value of RES Shred changes depending on how much Resistance the enemy already has.
For example, compare two enemies:
Enemy A: 10% RES
Enemy B: 40% RES
Apply 20% RES Shred to both.
Enemy A becomes:
10% → −10%
Enemy B becomes:
40% → 20%
Against Enemy A, part of the RES reduction goes below zero.
Against Enemy B, all 20 percentage points are still reducing positive Resistance.
That matters because negative RES is treated differently in the damage formula.
So there is no universal answer such as:
“20% RES Shred always gives X% more damage.”
You need to know the enemy’s starting RES.
Why Does RES Shred Give Smaller Returns Below 0%?
When enemy RES falls below 0%, the negative portion is effectively applied at half strength in the RES multiplier.
For example:
0% RES → 1.00×
−10% RES → 1.05×
−20% RES → 1.10×
−40% RES → 1.20×
So reducing RES from 0% to −20% does not create a 20% increase in the RES multiplier. It changes it from 1.00× to 1.10×.
RES Shred still works below zero, but its effect becomes less efficient.
For a detailed explanation of this mechanic, see Can Enemy RES Go Below 0% in Genshin Impact? What Happens to RES Shred?
Is RES Shred More Valuable Against High-RES Enemies?
It can be.
If an enemy has high Resistance to your main damage type, RES Shred may spend more of its reduction bringing that positive Resistance down toward 0%.
For example, an enemy with 40% RES has a:
0.60× RES multiplier
If 20% RES Shred reduces it to 20%:
0.80× RES multiplier
Comparing the two:
0.80 ÷ 0.60 ≈ 1.333
That’s approximately a 33.3% relative increase from the RES multiplier.
Notice how different that is from our earlier example:
20% RES Shred against 10% starting RES → about 16.7% increase
20% RES Shred against 40% starting RES → about 33.3% increase
Same RES Shred.
Very different result.
This is one reason RES Shred can be particularly valuable against enemies with high Resistance.
Does More RES Shred Always Mean More Damage?
As long as the RES Shred applies and isn’t prevented by a stacking restriction, lowering the relevant RES further can continue increasing damage.
But that does not mean adding more RES Shred is always the most efficient choice for your team.
Once the enemy is already below 0% RES, additional reduction gives smaller returns than it did while reducing positive RES.
At that point, another source of damage, buff, debuff, or utility may sometimes provide more overall value.
For a closer look at that decision, see Is Too Much RES Shred a Waste in Genshin Impact?
What If You Have Multiple RES Shred Sources?
Compatible RES Shred effects can often work together.
For example, if two compatible effects reduce the same relevant Resistance, their combined reduction can push the enemy’s RES lower and change the resulting RES multiplier.
However, some effects have their own non-stacking restrictions.
So before simply adding the percentages together, make sure the specific RES Shred effects can actually work together.
See Does RES Shred Stack in Genshin Impact? for a detailed explanation.
Does RES Shred Increase Every Type of Damage?
No.
RES is tied to specific damage types.
Reducing an enemy’s Pyro RES benefits damage affected by Pyro Resistance. Reducing Physical RES affects Physical damage instead.
Some RES Shred effects can reduce several types of Resistance, while others only affect specific Elements or damage types.
This means a large RES Shred percentage is only useful if it actually applies to the damage your team is dealing.
How Can You Estimate the Damage Increase From RES Shred?
A simple way to estimate it is:
- Find the enemy’s starting RES for your damage type.
- Subtract the RES Shred being applied.
- Calculate the RES multiplier before the reduction.
- Calculate the RES multiplier after the reduction.
- Divide the new multiplier by the old multiplier.
For example:
Starting multiplier = 0.90×
New multiplier = 1.15×
Then:
1.15 ÷ 0.90 ≈ 1.278
That means the change in RES produces approximately 27.8% more damage, assuming everything else remains unchanged.
This is much more accurate than simply looking at the RES Shred percentage and treating it as a direct DMG Bonus.
So, How Much Damage Does RES Shred Actually Add?
There is no single percentage that tells you how much damage RES Shred adds in every situation.
The result depends primarily on the enemy’s starting Resistance and how far the RES Shred reduces it.
The most important points are:
- RES Shred changes the enemy’s RES multiplier rather than directly adding DMG%.
- 20% RES Shred does not automatically mean 20% more damage.
- Against an enemy starting at 10% RES, 20% RES Shred gives about a 16.7% relative damage increase from the RES multiplier.
- Against an enemy starting at 40% RES, the same 20% RES Shred gives about a 33.3% relative increase.
- RES Shred continues working below 0% RES.
- RES Shred becomes less effective once RES is negative.
- The enemy’s starting RES is therefore essential when judging how valuable RES Shred actually is.
So instead of asking only “How much RES Shred do I have?”, look at where the enemy’s RES starts and where your RES Shred takes it.
