Yes. Enemy RES can go below 0% in Genshin Impact.
If you apply enough RES Shred to reduce an enemy’s Resistance past zero, the remaining reduction is not wasted. Negative RES can still increase the damage the enemy takes.
However, there is an important catch: RES Shred becomes less effective once the enemy’s RES falls below 0%.
What Happens When Enemy RES Reaches 0%?
Enemy RES affects how much damage the enemy takes from a particular damage type.
For RES between 0% and 75%, the RES multiplier is:
RES Multiplier = 1 − RES
For example, an enemy with 10% RES has a RES multiplier of:
1 − 0.10 = 0.90
This means the resistance portion of the damage calculation multiplies your damage by 0.90.
If RES Shred reduces that enemy from 10% RES to 0%, the multiplier becomes 1.00.
But RES does not stop at zero. If you apply additional RES Shred, it can become negative.
Can RES Shred Make Enemy RES Negative?
Yes.
Suppose an enemy starts with 10% RES and you apply 40% RES Shred.
The enemy’s resulting RES becomes:
10% − 40% = −30% RES
So the game does not simply stop the reduction at 0%.
Instead, it uses a different damage formula once RES becomes negative.
How Does Negative RES Affect Damage?
When enemy RES falls below 0%, the RES multiplier changes to:
RES Multiplier = 1 − (RES ÷ 2)
Using the previous example:
RES = −30%
The multiplier becomes:
1 − (−0.30 ÷ 2) = 1.15
So the enemy takes 1.15× damage from the RES portion of the damage calculation, compared with 0.90× when it had 10% RES.
This is why reducing RES below zero still helps your damage.
But it also explains why negative RES behaves differently.
Why Is RES Shred Less Effective Below 0%?
Once RES goes below zero, the negative portion effectively contributes at half strength to the RES multiplier.
Compare these situations:
| Enemy RES | RES Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 20% | 0.80× |
| 10% | 0.90× |
| 0% | 1.00× |
| −10% | 1.05× |
| −20% | 1.10× |
| −30% | 1.15× |
| −40% | 1.20× |
From 20% RES to 10%, the multiplier improves from 0.80 to 0.90.
But from −20% RES to −30%, it only improves from 1.10 to 1.15.
So additional RES Shred still works below zero, but each additional percentage point has a smaller effect on the RES multiplier than it does while bringing RES down toward zero.
Does RES Shred Stop Working Below 0%?
No.
This is an important distinction.
RES Shred does not suddenly stop working when the enemy reaches 0% RES.
Instead:
Above 0% RES → RES reduction has its normal effect.
Below 0% RES → negative RES still increases damage, but the negative portion is effectively applied at half strength in the RES multiplier formula.
So pushing RES into negative values can still be useful.
Is It Better to Reduce High RES or Push RES Below 0%?
Generally, RES Shred provides more value when it is reducing meaningful positive Resistance than when it is pushing an already-low Resistance further below zero.
For example, RES Shred can be particularly valuable against an enemy that has high resistance to your team’s main damage type.
Once the enemy is already below 0%, additional RES Shred still contributes damage, but the reduced effectiveness means other buffs or debuffs may sometimes provide more value.
The answer therefore depends on:
- The enemy’s starting RES
- Your team’s existing RES Shred
- The damage type your team deals
- Other buffs and debuffs available to the team
Does Stacking RES Shred Help Push RES Below 0%?
It can.
Multiple compatible RES Shred effects can reduce an enemy’s Resistance far enough to reach negative values.
However, not every RES Shred effect necessarily stacks with every copy or source.
For a detailed explanation of how multiple RES Shred effects interact, see Does RES Shred Stack in Genshin Impact?
Is Negative RES the Same as a DMG Bonus?
Not exactly.
Negative RES increases the damage an enemy takes through the RES multiplier in Genshin Impact’s damage calculation.
A character’s DMG Bonus is a different part of the damage calculation.
So it is better to think of negative RES as:
lower enemy Resistance → higher RES multiplier → more final damage
rather than treating negative RES as if it were simply another Elemental DMG Bonus stat.
So, Can Enemy RES Go Below 0%?
Yes. Enemy RES can go below 0% in Genshin Impact.
RES Shred does not stop working when Resistance reaches zero. If enough RES reduction is applied, the enemy can enter negative RES and take additional damage.
The key point is that negative RES has reduced effectiveness:
- RES above 0% is reduced normally.
- RES can continue below 0%.
- Below 0%, the negative RES portion affects the RES multiplier at half strength.
- Additional RES Shred can therefore still increase damage, but with reduced returns.
So reaching 0% RES is not a hard cap. It is the point where the way RES affects damage changes.
