Artifact farming in Genshin Impact gives you two major ways to obtain pieces from a specific Artifact set.
You can spend Original Resin farming an Artifact Domain, or you can convert unwanted 5-star Artifacts through the Artifact Strongbox.
Both methods can be useful, but they do not have the same opportunity cost.
The short answer is:
Farm an Artifact Domain when both sets are useful to your account or when you need a set that cannot currently be obtained through the Strongbox. Use the Artifact Strongbox to target available sets whose Domains are inefficient for your account, especially when you already have plenty of unwanted 5-star Artifacts.
In many cases, the most efficient strategy is not choosing one method exclusively.
It is using Artifact Domains and the Strongbox together.
1. What Is the Artifact Strongbox?
The Artifact Strongbox is part of the Mystic Offering system available through the Crafting Bench.
It becomes available at Adventure Rank 45.
The basic exchange is:
3 unwanted 5-star Artifacts → 1 new 5-star Artifact from the selected set
The resulting Artifact can be any piece from that set and has randomized stats.
This allows unwanted 5-star Artifacts to become additional chances at obtaining pieces you actually need.
2. What Is the Main Advantage of Farming a Domain?
Artifact Domains use Original Resin but provide Artifact drops directly.
The major advantage is that you receive pieces from both sets available in that Domain.
If both sets are useful to your account, this can be extremely efficient.
Imagine a Domain containing:
Set A — needed by your main DPS
Set B — useful for two of your supports
Almost every potentially good Artifact can contribute to one of your characters.
This makes the Domain an attractive place to spend Resin.
3. What Is the Main Disadvantage of Farming a Domain?
The problem appears when you only want one of the two sets.
Imagine:
Set A — extremely useful
Set B — completely unnecessary for your account
A significant portion of your Domain drops may belong to the set you do not want.
Those Artifacts can still become enhancement material or Strongbox fodder, but they do not directly advance the build you are farming.
This is where the Strongbox becomes especially valuable.
4. When Is the Artifact Strongbox Better?
The Strongbox becomes attractive when:
- The set you need is available through Mystic Offering
- The original Domain’s other set has little value to you
- You already have many unwanted 5-star Artifacts
- You want to farm another useful Domain with your Resin
- You are targeting improvements for an existing build
This lets you effectively work toward two goals at once.
You can farm a Resin-efficient Domain and convert unwanted pieces toward another Artifact set.
Current Artifact guides also commonly recommend using Strongbox for sets whose original Domains are inefficient for a particular account.
5. When Should You Farm the Domain Instead?
Direct Domain farming can be better when both available sets are valuable.
Suppose you are building several characters and either set can produce useful pieces.
In that case, spending Resin there gives you many potential upgrades.
Direct farming can also be necessary when the Artifact set you need is not currently available through the Strongbox.
The available Strongbox selection does not automatically include every Artifact set in the game, so always check whether your target set is actually available before planning around it.
6. Strongbox Does Not Cost Original Resin Directly
One of the biggest advantages of the Strongbox is that the conversion itself does not consume Original Resin.
Instead, its cost is your unwanted 5-star Artifacts.
This creates an important farming loop:
Spend Resin in a useful Domain
→ Keep promising Artifacts
→ Take unwanted 5-star Artifacts
→ Convert them through Strongbox
→ Receive additional pieces from another desired set
This can make your total Artifact farming more efficient.
7. But Strongbox Artifacts Are Not Free
It is easy to describe Strongbox pieces as free because the conversion does not consume Resin.
Technically, however, those 5-star Artifacts originally came from somewhere.
You are giving up three Artifacts to receive one new Artifact.
Those unwanted pieces could instead have been used as Artifact EXP.
So the real cost of Strongboxing is primarily:
Artifact fodder and opportunity cost.
That distinction becomes particularly important for newer accounts.
8. Newer Players May Need Artifact EXP More
When you first begin serious Artifact farming, you may obtain many potentially useful pieces but lack enough Artifact EXP to level them.
In that situation, feeding unwanted Artifacts into the Strongbox immediately may leave you short on enhancement materials.
Artifact optimization guides therefore note that newer Artifact-farming accounts may sometimes benefit more from using bad pieces as EXP until their initial builds are established.
You do not have to Strongbox every bad 5-star Artifact immediately.
Use the resource your account needs most.
9. Developed Accounts Can Get More Value From Strongbox
The situation changes as your account develops.
Eventually, you may already have:
- Several leveled Artifact sets
- Plenty of lower-rarity Artifact EXP
- Many 5-star pieces that cannot improve any character
At that point, converting unwanted 5-star Artifacts into additional chances at a useful set can become much more attractive.
This is especially true when you are trying to replace already-good pieces.
You may need many attempts before finding an actual upgrade.
10. Do Not Strongbox Potentially Useful Artifacts Too Quickly
An Artifact does not need perfect CRIT stats to be worth keeping.
Before converting a piece, consider whether it could be useful for:
- Another character
- A future build
- A support
- An Elemental Mastery build
- An Energy Recharge build
- HP- or DEF-scaling characters
- An off-piece
A piece that looks useless for your current DPS may be excellent for another character.
Be especially careful with rare main stats and pieces containing multiple potentially useful substats.
11. Strongbox Is Excellent for Targeting One Specific Set
A normal Artifact Domain contains two Artifact sets.
Strongbox lets you choose the specific eligible set you want.
You still cannot choose:
- Artifact slot
- Main stat
- Substats
- Upgrade rolls
But every result at least belongs to your selected set.
That makes Strongbox particularly useful when the set itself is your main bottleneck.
12. Domain Farming Can Build Multiple Characters at Once
Strongbox targeting is useful, but direct Domain farming has another advantage.
One Domain can sometimes provide sets used by several different characters.
Instead of thinking:
“Which set is strongest?”
ask:
“How many useful characters can this Domain improve?”
If both sets have multiple users on your account, direct farming can have excellent long-term value.
This is why Artifact Domain efficiency should be judged at the account level, not only for one character.
13. Use Your Best Off-Piece
Remember that a character using a 4-piece Artifact set does not normally need all five equipped Artifacts to belong to that set.
One slot can usually be an off-piece.
This is especially useful for difficult pieces such as:
- Elemental DMG Goblets
- CRIT Circlets
- Specific Sands main stats
Do not continue farming or Strongboxing solely because one excellent off-set Artifact does not match the rest of the set.
A strong off-piece can save enormous amounts of farming.
14. Strongbox Can Make Old Domains Less Necessary
As more Artifact sets become available through the Strongbox, directly farming some older Domains can become less attractive.
Suppose you want an older set but have no use for the other set from its Domain.
Instead of spending all your Resin there, you may be able to:
Farm a more useful Domain → keep useful drops → Strongbox the unwanted pieces into the older set.
This allows one pool of Resin to contribute toward several builds.
It is one of the strongest reasons to include the Strongbox in long-term Artifact farming.
15. Should You Strongbox Every Bad 5-Star Artifact?
Not automatically.
A simple decision process is:
Could this Artifact realistically be useful?
If yes, keep it.
If no, ask:
Do I currently need Artifact EXP?
If yes, consider using it as enhancement material.
If no, ask:
Is there a Strongbox set I actively need?
If yes, Strongbox becomes an excellent destination.
The best choice depends on your account.
16. Domain vs Strongbox Example
Suppose you need Set A, which is available through Strongbox.
Its Domain contains:
Set A — useful
Set B — not useful to you
Meanwhile, another Domain contains:
Set C — useful for Character 2
Set D — useful for Character 3
Instead of spending all your Resin farming Set A directly, you could farm the second Domain.
Keep good Set C and Set D pieces.
Then convert unwanted 5-star drops into Set A through Strongbox.
Now the same Resin investment can potentially improve three different characters.
That is the basic idea behind efficient Domain + Strongbox farming.
17. When Direct Domain Farming Is Clearly Better
Farm the Domain directly when:
- Your target set is not available in Strongbox
- Both Domain sets are valuable to your account
- You need large numbers of pieces from both sets
- You urgently need Artifact EXP as well as potential pieces
- The Domain provides the best overall value for several characters
Strongbox is a supplement to Artifact farming, not a universal replacement for Domains.
18. When Strongbox Is Especially Attractive
Strongbox is particularly useful when:
- You want an eligible set from an inefficient Domain
- You only care about one set from that Domain
- You have many unusable 5-star Artifacts
- Your current Resin is better spent somewhere else
- You are optimizing an already functional character
The more developed your Artifact inventory becomes, the more useful this recycling system can become.

This is a general framework rather than an absolute rule.
Your existing characters and Artifact inventory still matter.
Can You Use Both at the Same Time?
Yes—and for many developed accounts, this is the best approach.
You do not need to decide:
Domain OR Strongbox.
Instead:
Farm the most useful Domain for your account and Strongbox the unusable 5-star drops into another set you need.
This turns bad Artifact drops into additional farming attempts instead of treating every failed Domain run as completely wasted.
Final Advice
Artifact Domains and the Artifact Strongbox are not competing systems.
They work best when used together.
Farm Domains where both sets provide useful value to your account, or when the set you need cannot currently be obtained through Mystic Offering.
Use the Strongbox to target eligible sets whose original Domains provide poor value for your account.
And do not automatically convert every unwanted 5-star Artifact. If you are short on Artifact EXP, some pieces may be more valuable as enhancement material.
The simplest rule is:
Spend Resin where the largest number of drops can help your account, then use the Strongbox to recycle the 5-star pieces that cannot.
That approach gives every Artifact farming session more opportunities to produce something useful.
