Artifact farming is one of the longest progression systems in Genshin Impact.
You can spend days or even weeks farming the same Artifact Domain and still feel like your character is not finished.
The problem is that Artifacts are heavily affected by RNG.
Even after obtaining the correct set and main stats, you may still be looking for better substats or hoping that upgrades roll into CRIT instead of less useful stats.
So when should you stop?
The short answer is:
Stop intensive Artifact farming once your character has the correct main stats, a functional set, and good enough substats to perform their role comfortably. At that point, improving guaranteed upgrades or building another character is often more efficient than chasing a perfect Artifact.
There is no universal stopping point, but there are several ways to tell when it is time to leave a Domain.
1. Artifact Farming Has Diminishing Returns
The first useful Artifact upgrades usually come relatively quickly.
You may start with:
- Incorrect main stats
- Weak substats
- Incomplete sets
- Low-level Artifacts
Replacing those pieces can produce large improvements.
But eventually your character may already have five reasonably good pieces.
Now you are no longer searching for a good Artifact.
You are searching for an Artifact better than the good one you already have.
That becomes much harder.
2. Get the Correct Main Stats First
Before worrying about perfect substats, make sure your important Artifact pieces have appropriate main stats.
Depending on the character, these may include stats such as:
- ATK%
- HP%
- DEF%
- Energy Recharge
- Elemental Mastery
- Elemental DMG Bonus
- Physical DMG Bonus
- CRIT Rate
- CRIT DMG
- Healing Bonus
The correct main stats generally matter much more than forcing impressive-looking substats onto the wrong main stat.
Your first Artifact goal should therefore be functional pieces, not perfect pieces.
3. Get a Functional Set
Many characters benefit significantly from particular Artifact set bonuses.
Your next goal is usually obtaining the appropriate:
- 2-piece combination
- 4-piece set
- Character-specific alternative
However, do not assume that completing a set automatically makes every piece good.
A strong off-set piece can sometimes be better than forcing a weak Artifact purely to complete a set.
Remember that one of your five Artifact slots can normally be used as an off-piece while maintaining a 4-piece bonus.
4. Do Not Chase Perfect Substats Immediately
Once you have the correct main stats, begin improving substats.
Useful substats depend on the character.
Common examples include:
- CRIT Rate
- CRIT DMG
- Energy Recharge
- Elemental Mastery
- ATK%
- HP%
- DEF%
But a useful Artifact does not need every substat to be perfect.
For example, an Artifact containing:
- CRIT Rate
- CRIT DMG
- Energy Recharge
- One less useful stat
can still be extremely good.
Waiting for four ideal starting substats before accepting a piece can dramatically increase your farming time.
5. Your Character’s Role Determines What “Good Enough” Means
Not every character needs the same level of Artifact investment.
A main damage dealer may benefit significantly from better offensive substats.
A support may mainly need:
- Enough Energy Recharge
- The correct Artifact set
- A role-specific main stat
Once that support can reliably perform their job, additional weeks of Artifact farming may provide very little improvement.
Judge Artifacts based on what the character needs to do.
6. Energy Requirements Can Be More Important Than CRIT
A character can have impressive CRIT stats and still perform poorly if their Elemental Burst is not available when needed.
For Burst-dependent characters, sufficient Energy Recharge can be more important than adding another small amount of CRIT.
If your rotation requires a character’s Burst every cycle, first make sure their Energy needs are satisfied.
After that, optimize offensive stats.
A character that works consistently is more valuable than one with impressive stats that cannot complete the intended rotation.
7. Stop When Upgrades Become Extremely Rare
One of the clearest signs that you are approaching the end of useful Artifact farming is when almost everything you obtain becomes fodder.
Suppose your current Sands already has:
- The correct main stat
- Several useful substats
- Good upgrade rolls
Now another Sands must not only have the correct main stat—it also needs sufficiently strong substats and successful upgrade rolls to beat your existing piece.
The probability of finding an improvement becomes increasingly small.
At that point, your Resin may provide more account value elsewhere.
8. Compare the Upgrade to Its Resin Cost
Imagine spending another week farming a Domain.
Best-case scenario:
You replace one Artifact and gain a small amount of CRIT.
Now compare that with spending the same Resin on another character who still needs:
- Ascension
- Weapon levels
- Talent levels
- A basic Artifact set
The second option may produce a much larger improvement to your overall account.
Artifact farming should therefore be evaluated by opportunity cost.
9. Finish Guaranteed Upgrades Before Extreme Artifact Optimization
Before chasing tiny Artifact improvements, check whether the character still has meaningful guaranteed upgrades available.
These may include:
- Character ascension
- Character levels
- Weapon levels
- Important Talent levels
If these upgrades provide significant value, complete them first.
Artifact optimization becomes much more reasonable once the important guaranteed progression is already finished.
10. Building Another Teammate May Be More Valuable
Your main DPS does not fight alone.
Suppose your main character already has strong Artifacts, but one of their supports is poorly built.
Improving that support may increase:
- Buff uptime
- Off-field damage
- Elemental application
- Energy generation
- Reaction damage
- Team consistency
That can produce more overall improvement than trying to add a few extra CRIT rolls to your main character.
Think about the entire team rather than one stat screen.
11. Do Not Use One CRIT Ratio as a Universal Stopping Point
Players often ask questions such as:
“Is 70/140 CRIT enough?”
There is no universal answer.
Characters have different:
- Ascension stats
- Weapons
- Artifact sets
- Team buffs
- Energy requirements
- Scaling stats
- Reaction roles
A specific CRIT ratio that looks excellent on one character may not even be relevant to another.
Use CRIT as part of the build, not as the only measure of whether farming is finished.
12. Artifact Quality Should Be Judged as a Complete Build
Do not judge every Artifact independently.
An individual piece may look mediocre but solve an important problem in the complete build.
For example, one Artifact may provide enough Energy Recharge to make your rotation work.
Replacing it with a higher-CRIT piece could actually make the character less consistent.
Look at the final character rather than trying to make all five Artifacts individually impressive.
13. Some Artifact Slots Are Harder to Replace
Not every Artifact slot has the same main-stat restrictions.
Flowers always have HP as their main stat.
Plumes always have ATK.
Sands, Goblets, and Circlets have multiple possible main stats.
This makes obtaining the exact Sands, Goblet, or Circlet you need more difficult.
As a result, your best off-piece is often used in one of these harder-to-farm slots.
Do not reject an otherwise strong build simply because one piece belongs to another set.
14. Use the Strongbox to Improve Your Farming Efficiency
Unwanted 5-star Artifacts do not always have to become enhancement material.
The Artifact Strongbox allows eligible 5-star Artifacts to be exchanged for pieces from selected Artifact sets.
This gives unwanted drops another potential use.
For some sets, this can reduce the need to repeatedly farm an older or inefficient Domain.
It can also allow your active Resin to be spent in a Domain where both available sets are useful while unwanted pieces are converted toward another set.
We will cover Artifact Domains vs Strongbox separately in the next Farming guide.
15. When Should You Leave an Artifact Domain?
Consider moving on when most of these are true:
- You have the intended set or functional alternative
- Important main stats are correct
- Your character has enough Energy Recharge
- Most pieces have useful substats
- The character performs their intended role comfortably
- Replacing existing pieces has become very difficult
- Other characters still need major upgrades
At this point, the build does not need to be perfect.
It needs to be good enough that another use of Resin provides more value.
16. When Should You Keep Farming?
Continue farming if your build still has obvious weaknesses.
For example:
- Important main stats are wrong
- You cannot complete the needed set
- Energy Recharge is far below what the rotation requires
- Several pieces have almost no useful substats
- Your main damage dealer is clearly underperforming
- The Domain also provides useful Artifacts for other characters
In these situations, Artifact farming can still provide meaningful improvements relatively frequently.
17. Domain Efficiency Matters
Some Artifact Domains are more efficient than others for your account.
Suppose a Domain contains:
Set A — useful for several characters
and
Set B — also useful for several characters.
Even unsuccessful drops may eventually find a use.
Compare that with a Domain where you want one set but have almost no use for the other.
The first Domain can provide better overall account value.
This becomes increasingly important once you are building many characters.
18. How Long Should You Farm One Character?
There is no fixed number of days.
One character might obtain a functional set quickly.
Another might spend weeks waiting for one specific main stat.
Artifact RNG makes a universal farming duration impossible.
Instead of saying:
“I will farm this character for 30 days.”
use a stopping condition:
“I will farm until the character has the correct main stats, enough Energy Recharge, and reasonable substats.”
That gives you a useful goal without requiring perfect RNG.
19. Functional Build vs Optimized Build
It helps to separate Artifact progression into two stages.
Functional Build
The character has:
- Correct main stats
- Appropriate set
- Required Energy Recharge
- Several useful substats
The character can perform their role reliably.
Optimized Build
You begin replacing already-good Artifacts with even stronger pieces.
This may involve:
- Better CRIT balance
- More useful rolls
- Better secondary stats
- Higher overall damage
Functional builds should generally come before extreme optimization.
20. Endgame Artifact Farming Is Different
For a developed account, there may be few guaranteed upgrades remaining.
At that point, spending large amounts of Resin chasing small Artifact improvements is completely reasonable.
If:
- Your main teams are already built
- Important Talents are finished
- Weapons are leveled
- You have enough Mora and EXP
- No new character needs immediate investment
then Artifact optimization may be one of the best remaining uses of Resin.
The same farming behavior that is inefficient for a developing account can make sense for an endgame account.
Artifact Farming Stopping Checklist
Before running the same Domain again, ask:
- Do I already have the correct main stats?
- Is my Artifact set functional?
- Do I have enough Energy Recharge?
- Are most of my substats useful?
- How likely is today’s farming to produce an actual upgrade?
- Does another teammate need more important upgrades?
- Do I still have guaranteed upgrades available?
- Can I obtain this set through the Artifact Strongbox?
- Is the other set in this Domain useful?
- Am I improving the character or simply chasing perfection?
If your current pieces are already strong and almost every new drop is immediately discarded, it may be time to move on.
Final Advice
Artifact farming does not have a true finish line.
There can almost always be a better Goblet, another CRIT roll, or a slightly stronger Circlet.
That is exactly why you need to create your own stopping point.
Start with the correct main stats and a functional Artifact set. Make sure important requirements such as Energy Recharge are satisfied, then improve your substats until the character performs their role reliably.
After that, compare the potential value of another Artifact upgrade with everything else your Resin could accomplish.
Do not ask whether your Artifacts are perfect. Ask whether improving them is still the best upgrade available to your account.
When the answer becomes no, leave the Domain and build something else.
