If you are using RES Shred in Genshin Impact but your damage does not seem to increase, it does not necessarily mean the effect is broken.
RES Shred only helps when the resistance reduction actually matches the damage you are dealing and the effect is successfully applied to the enemy.
Common reasons RES Shred may appear not to work include:
- Reducing the wrong type of RES
- Swirling the wrong element with Viridescent Venerer
- Attacking after the RES reduction has expired
- Testing against different enemies
- Confusing RES Shred with DEF reduction
- Expecting the same damage increase from every amount of RES Shred
Here is what to check if your RES Shred does not seem to be increasing your damage.
Why Is My RES Shred Not Increasing Damage?
First, make sure the RES reduction matches the type of damage you are actually dealing.
For example:
Hydro RES reduction → benefits Hydro damage
Pyro RES reduction → benefits Pyro damage
Physical RES reduction → benefits Physical damage
Reducing one type of resistance does not automatically reduce every other resistance.
So if your main damage dealer is using Hydro attacks but your setup only reduced Pyro RES, your Hydro damage will not receive the benefit you expected.
This is one of the first things to check when RES Shred appears to do nothing.
Did You Swirl the Wrong Element?
This is an especially important issue when using the Viridescent Venerer Artifact set.
The 4-piece effect can reduce the enemy’s resistance to the element involved in the Swirl reaction.
So if you want to reduce:
Hydro RES
you need to trigger the appropriate Hydro Swirl.
If you accidentally Swirl a different element, you may reduce that element’s RES instead.
This can happen when multiple elements are present during a rotation.
The effect itself may therefore be working correctly—you simply did not reduce the resistance your main damage dealer needed.
Does Viridescent Venerer Reduce Every Elemental RES?
No.
Equipping Viridescent Venerer does not automatically apply RES reduction for every element in your team.
Its resistance reduction depends on the element involved in the relevant Swirl.
Swirl can interact with:
- Pyro
- Hydro
- Electro
- Cryo
If your damage test relies on Viridescent Venerer, pay attention to which element was actually Swirled before your main damage window begins.
Do not assume that simply using an Anemo character means the enemy already has the correct RES reduction.
Did the RES Shred Expire Before Your Main Attack?
Some RES reduction effects only last for a limited period.
If too much time passes between applying the effect and using your main damage dealer, the debuff may expire before the most important attacks land.
This is where team rotation matters.
A rotation may need to:
- Apply the necessary element.
- Trigger the RES reduction.
- Switch to the main damage dealer.
- Use the important attacks while the effect is still active.
If you add too many actions between these steps, part of your damage window may occur after the RES Shred has ended.
Why Does Superconduct Not Increase My Cryo or Electro Damage?
Because Superconduct reduces Physical RES, not Cryo RES or Electro RES.
Superconduct is triggered using Cryo and Electro, which can make this confusing.
However, its resistance reduction benefits:
Physical damage
If your character is primarily dealing Cryo or Electro damage, triggering Superconduct does not automatically provide the corresponding Cryo or Electro RES Shred.
So if you tested an Elemental attack before and after Superconduct and expected a large increase from its RES reduction, you may not see the result you expected.
Why Is My Damage Increase Smaller Than Expected?
RES Shred percentages do not directly equal the percentage increase in your final damage.
For example:
40% RES reduction does not automatically mean 40% more damage.
The actual improvement depends partly on the enemy’s resistance before the effect is applied.
There is another important mechanic:
Once enemy RES goes below 0%, additional resistance reduction has reduced effectiveness.
So if your existing team already pushes an enemy’s relevant RES below zero, adding even more RES Shred can still help, but the additional increase may be smaller than you expected.

Are You Testing RES Shred Against the Same Enemy?
Different enemies can have different resistance values.
Because of this, comparing damage against two different enemies is not a reliable way to determine whether RES Shred is working.
For a cleaner test:
- Use the same character
- Use the same weapon and artifacts
- Fight the same enemy
- Use the same attack
- Keep buffs and team effects consistent
- Compare damage with and without the RES reduction
This helps isolate the effect of RES Shred from other variables.
Could Another Buff Be Affecting Your Damage Test?
Yes.
Genshin Impact damage can change because of many effects beyond enemy resistance.
Your test may also be affected by:
- Character buffs
- Artifact effects
- Elemental reactions
- DMG Bonus
- ATK buffs
- CRIT
- Enemy state
- Other debuffs
If several effects change between your two tests, it can become difficult to tell how much of the difference came specifically from RES Shred.
Try to change only the RES reduction effect while keeping everything else as consistent as possible.
Is RES Shred the Same as DEF Shred?
No.
RES Shred and DEF reduction affect different parts of the damage calculation.
RES Shred lowers an enemy’s resistance to a particular damage type.
DEF reduction affects the enemy’s Defense.
Both can increase your damage, but applying one does not mean you have also applied the other.
So if a character or effect says it reduces DEF, do not automatically treat that as Elemental or Physical RES Shred.
Is RES Shred Actually Bugged?
Usually, check the activation conditions before assuming the mechanic is bugged.
If RES Shred appears not to work, verify:
- Which RES is being reduced
- Which damage type you are testing
- Whether the required reaction or condition activated
- Which element was Swirled
- Whether the effect was still active when you attacked
- Whether you tested against the same enemy
- Whether other buffs changed between tests
If all of those conditions are consistent and the expected effect still does not appear, then it becomes more reasonable to investigate whether a specific character, ability, or interaction is behaving unexpectedly.
Quick Checklist: Why Is RES Shred Not Working?
If your RES Shred does not seem to increase damage, check these first:
- Make sure the RES reduction matches your damage type.
- If using Viridescent Venerer, confirm that you Swirled the correct element.
- Make sure the RES Shred effect actually activated.
- Use your main attacks before the effect expires.
- Remember that Superconduct reduces Physical RES.
- Test against the same enemy.
- Keep other buffs and conditions consistent.
- Do not assume 40% RES Shred means exactly 40% more final damage.
- Remember that additional RES Shred becomes less effective once enemy RES is below 0%.
In most cases, RES Shred is working—the issue is that the wrong resistance was reduced, the activation condition was missed, or the effect was no longer active during the main damage window.
