You have the boss materials, enough Mora, and everything else ready for your character’s next Ascension—but you’re missing the elemental gems.
Maybe you need Agnidus Agate for a Pyro character, Varunada Lazurite for Hydro, or another elemental gemstone series, and your inventory simply does not have enough.
So what is the most efficient way to get more?
If you run out of Character Ascension Gems, don’t immediately spend Original Resin farming random bosses just for gemstones. First check whether you can craft higher-tier gems from smaller pieces or convert excess gems from another element using Dust of Azoth. If you still need boss-specific materials for a character, prioritize bosses that help you progress both requirements at the same time.
Why Do You Run Out of Ascension Gems?
Character Ascension Gems are shared by characters of the same element.
That means your supply can disappear surprisingly quickly if you build several characters from one element.
For example, building multiple Pyro characters requires all of them to draw from your Agnidus Agate supply.
Meanwhile, gemstones belonging to elements you rarely build may continue accumulating.
This can leave an account with plenty of gems overall but very few of the particular element currently needed.
Boss drops can also contribute to the imbalance because the amount and type of elemental gems you receive do not always line up perfectly with the character-specific Ascension Materials you are farming.
First, Check Your Lower-Tier Gems
Before farming anything, open your inventory and check whether you already have smaller versions of the gemstone you need.
Character Ascension Gems come in four tiers:
- Sliver
- Fragment
- Chunk
- Gemstone
At a Crafting Bench, three pieces of a lower tier can be crafted into one piece of the next tier.
So:
3 Slivers → 1 Fragment
3 Fragments → 1 Chunk
3 Chunks → 1 Gemstone
You may appear to have zero Gemstones while actually possessing enough Fragments and Chunks to craft what you need.
Always check this before spending Resin.
How Many Ascension Gems Does a Character Need?
To fully ascend a character through all Ascension phases, the standard elemental gemstone requirement is:
| Material | Total Required |
|---|---|
| Sliver | 1 |
| Fragment | 9 |
| Chunk | 9 |
| Gemstone | 6 |
This is one reason gemstone shortages become more noticeable toward the later Ascension stages.
Early Ascensions require relatively inexpensive pieces.
Later ones begin asking for Chunks and eventually multiple Gemstones, which represent a much larger amount of lower-tier material.
If several characters of the same element reach those stages around the same time, an elemental stockpile can disappear quickly.
Should You Keep Farming the Character’s Boss?
If you still need the character-specific boss material, usually yes.
This is the most efficient situation because each Resin expenditure can contribute toward two requirements:
Character-specific boss material + elemental Ascension Gems
Even if the boss does not give you enough of the correct gems immediately, you still need its unique material.
Stopping too early just because your gemstone supply is low may leave you with the opposite problem later: enough gemstones, but not enough boss materials.
Finish—or get close to finishing—the character-specific boss requirement before considering Resin farming solely for gems.
What If the Boss Isn’t Giving You Enough of the Right Gem?
This is where players can become confused.
You may be fighting the correct boss and receiving the exact character-specific material you need while your elemental gemstone supply barely improves.
In some cases, a boss can also provide gemstones associated with more than one element.
That does not necessarily mean you’re farming the wrong boss.
Before changing bosses, consider whether you can solve the gemstone shortage separately.

Should You Convert Gems With Dust of Azoth?
Often, yes.
Dust of Azoth allows you to convert Character Ascension Gems from one element into another at a Crafting Bench.
Suppose you have a large supply of Cryo gems but need Pyro gems.
Instead of spending Resin on another boss solely for Agnidus Agate, you can convert some of your unused Shivada Jade into the equivalent Pyro material.
This is particularly useful when:
- You have a large surplus from another element.
- You don’t plan to build characters of that element soon.
- Ascension Gems are the only thing preventing your current character from ascending.
- Farming another boss would give you unique materials you have no use for.
However, don’t automatically convert every unused gemstone in your inventory.
If you’re unsure whether the conversion is worth the resource cost, see:
Should You Use Dust of Azoth to Convert Ascension Gems in Genshin Impact?
Which Elemental Gems Should You Convert?
The best candidates are generally gemstones you have in large excess and are unlikely to need soon.
But “I have a lot of these” is not enough by itself.
Check your future character plans.
If you have a large Hydro gemstone stockpile but intend to build two Hydro characters next, those gems are already spoken for.
On the other hand, if you have accumulated a large amount of an element you rarely use, converting part of that supply may be an efficient solution.
A safe approach is:
Convert only enough to complete the Ascension you need now.
There is usually no reason to convert your entire surplus in advance.
Should You Farm Another Boss Just for Ascension Gems?
Sometimes—but it should not be your first option.
Boss farming costs Original Resin, and every boss also provides character-specific materials.
If you don’t need those materials, part of the value of your Resin is effectively being lost.
Before farming a boss solely for elemental gems, ask:
Does another character I plan to build need this boss?
If yes, farming it can be efficient.
You could collect the gemstones for Character A while simultaneously preparing the boss materials for Character B.
If no character on your account needs those boss materials, conversion with Dust of Azoth may be a better use of your resources.
Can Weekly Bosses Give You Ascension Gems?
Yes.
Weekly Boss rewards can include Character Ascension Gems in addition to their other materials.
However, Weekly Bosses should not generally be treated as an on-demand solution to a gemstone shortage.
Their rewards are limited, the elemental drops vary by boss, and you may have other reasons for choosing which Weekly Bosses to claim.
Think of these gems as part of your long-term gemstone supply rather than something you should specifically farm whenever you run short.
Can Daily Commissions Help?
Yes, gradually.
Daily Commission rewards can provide Character Ascension gemstone Slivers.
A single Sliver is not going to solve a late-game gemstone shortage, but these rewards accumulate over time.
This is one reason established accounts can slowly build large gemstone inventories even when they are not actively farming bosses for every element.
For an immediate Ascension, however, you will usually need to rely on the gems already in your inventory, crafting, conversion, or boss rewards.
Can Events Give Character Ascension Gems?
Some events and other reward sources can contribute elemental gems or related Ascension resources.
These rewards are useful over time, but they are not reliable enough to form an immediate farming strategy.
If your character is ready to ascend today, waiting for an unspecified future event is rarely a practical solution.
Treat event rewards as a way of gradually building your inventory rather than your primary answer to an urgent shortage.
Should You Farm Gems Before You Need Them?
Usually not with Resin.
Stockpiling some gemstones naturally is useful, but spending Resin solely to create a large reserve for hypothetical future characters is rarely necessary.
Your future needs can change.
You might pull a different character, change your build plans, or naturally accumulate more gemstones before you ever need them.
This is especially relevant when pre-farming an upcoming character.
Preparing resources early can be worthwhile when you are confident you will obtain and build that character, but speculative farming carries more risk.
If you’re considering doing that, see:
Should You Pre-Farm Materials for a Character Before Pulling Them in Genshin Impact?
What Is the Most Resin-Efficient Way to Get More Ascension Gems?
There isn’t one answer for every account, but there is a useful order of operations.
1. Check your existing inventory
Look at Slivers, Fragments, Chunks, and Gemstones.
Crafting may already solve the shortage.
2. Continue farming required boss materials
If your character still needs their unique boss drop, keep progressing that requirement.
3. Check for excess gems of another element
If you have plenty, Dust of Azoth may solve the problem without additional Resin.
4. Consider another character you’re planning to build
If their boss also drops the element you need, farming ahead can make the Resin useful for both characters.
5. Farm solely for gems only when the other options don’t make sense
At that point, spending Resin specifically to obtain more gemstones may be reasonable.
The goal is to avoid paying Resin for boss-specific materials that will simply sit unused.
What If You Keep Running Out of the Same Element?
Look at your roster.
You may simply be building many characters of that element.
There is nothing inherently wrong with that, but it changes how you should think about gemstone resources.
Instead of converting every spare gem as soon as a shortage appears, you may want to keep a larger reserve of the element your account consumes most frequently.
Likewise, gemstones from elements you rarely build become stronger candidates for Dust of Azoth conversion.
Over time, the “valuable” element for your account may be very different from another player’s.
Is Running Out of Ascension Gems Normal?
Yes.
It can happen even when you have been farming the correct bosses.
Gemstone requirements increase substantially during later Ascensions, characters of the same element share the same gemstone series, and your boss-material progress does not always perfectly match your gemstone progress.
A shortage therefore does not automatically mean you have managed your resources badly.
The important part is how you solve it.
Spending Resin immediately is one option, but it is not always the most efficient one.
Final Recommendation
If you run out of Character Ascension Gems, use this order:
Check smaller gem pieces → craft what you can → continue farming any boss-specific materials you still need → consider Dust of Azoth → only then consider farming another boss solely for gems.
The biggest mistake is seeing an empty gemstone inventory and immediately spending Resin on whichever boss drops the right element.
You may already have enough resources to solve the problem without doing that.
And when additional farming really is necessary, try to choose a boss whose other drops will also help a character you intend to build.
That way, solving one material shortage doesn’t create a pile of materials you have no use for.
