After farming Artifacts for a while in Genshin Impact, you will eventually collect plenty of 5-star Artifacts you do not want to use.
Maybe the main stat is wrong. Maybe the substats are poor. Or perhaps you already have several better pieces from the same set.
That leaves an important question:
Should you use unwanted 5-star Artifacts as enhancement EXP, or put them into the Artifact Strongbox?
In most cases, the better choice depends on what your account needs more.
Use unwanted 5-star Artifacts for EXP when you need to level promising Artifacts. Use the Artifact Strongbox when you have enough Artifact EXP and would rather turn unwanted pieces into additional chances at useful Artifacts from a specific available set.

Should You Strongbox an Artifact Just Because It Has Bad Substats?
Be careful.
Before using any 5-star Artifact as EXP or Strongbox material, make sure it is actually something you are comfortable losing.
An Artifact can still have potential even when it does not look perfect at +0.
Consider:
- Its main stat
- Its Artifact set
- Its current substats
- Which characters could use it
- How difficult a similar piece would be to replace
- Whether leveling it to +4 could reveal useful additional potential
This is especially important for pieces with useful or difficult-to-replace main stats.
Do not turn a potentially valuable Artifact into Strongbox material simply because it lacks an ideal double-CRIT starting combination.
Should You Use Leveled 5-Star Artifacts in the Strongbox?

A leveled Artifact already contains enhancement EXP that you invested into it.
If an upgraded Artifact rolled poorly and you no longer want it, using it as enhancement material for another promising Artifact can recover part of that invested value.

Is Strongbox Better Than Farming Artifact Domains?
Not necessarily.
The two systems use different resources.
Artifact Domains consume Resin and give you new Artifacts along with Artifact EXP opportunities.
The Strongbox consumes unwanted 5-star Artifacts and lets you select an available Artifact set for the resulting pieces.
Because of this, Strongbox is better viewed as a supplement to Artifact farming, not a universal replacement for Domains.
Which one deserves more attention depends on the Artifact sets you need and how you want to spend your Resin.
