Farming Artifacts in Genshin Impact often leaves you with two ways to look for the pieces you need.
You can spend Resin farming an Artifact Domain, or you can take unwanted 5-star Artifacts you already own and use them in the Artifact Strongbox.
Both methods can give you new 5-star Artifacts, but they use different resources and offer different advantages.
So which one is better?
Artifact Domains are generally better when you need both sets from a Domain, need more Artifact EXP, or are actively spending Resin to build your Artifact collection. The Artifact Strongbox is especially useful when you want to target one specific available set and have unwanted 5-star Artifacts you can exchange.
For many accounts, the best answer is not choosing one or the other.

What Is the Difference Between Artifact Domains and the Artifact Strongbox?
Artifact Domains and the Artifact Strongbox both give you Artifacts, but they work very differently.
Artifact Domains
Artifact Domains require Original Resin to claim their rewards.
When you farm a Domain, you receive Artifacts from the sets available in that Domain.
This means Domain farming directly converts Resin into new Artifact drops.
Artifact Strongbox
The Artifact Strongbox does not directly cost Resin.
Instead, Mystic Offering lets you exchange three unwanted 5-star Artifacts for one random 5-star Artifact from a selected set that is available through the Strongbox system.
This means the Strongbox uses Artifacts you already obtained as its resource.
That difference is important when deciding which method is more useful for your account.
Is the Artifact Strongbox Better Because It Does Not Cost Resin?
Not automatically.
It is true that using the Artifact Strongbox does not directly consume Original Resin.
However, the 5-star Artifacts you put into it came from somewhere.
Many of them may have originally been obtained through Resin-based Artifact farming.
Those unwanted Artifacts also have other potential uses, including providing Artifact EXP.
So the Strongbox is not completely free.
It is better to think of it as a way to recycle unwanted 5-star Artifacts into additional Artifact chances.
That can still be extremely valuable.
When Is Farming an Artifact Domain Better?
Artifact Domain farming becomes particularly attractive when both Artifact sets from the Domain are useful to you.
Suppose one set is useful for Character A and the other is useful for Character B.
Now many of the 5-star drops you receive have at least some potential value regardless of which set appears.
This makes the Domain an efficient place to spend Resin.
Domain farming can also be preferable when:
- You are building several characters
- You need a large number of Artifacts
- Both available sets have useful applications
- You need Artifact EXP as well as new pieces
- The set you want is not available through the Artifact Strongbox
- You are still developing your overall Artifact collection
In these situations, spending Resin on the Domain can provide multiple forms of progress at once.
When Is the Artifact Strongbox Better?
The Strongbox becomes especially attractive when you want one particular Artifact set that is available through Mystic Offering.
Suppose you need Set A, but its Artifact Domain also drops Set B.
If you have little or no use for Set B, farming that Domain means some of your Resin-funded 5-star drops will come from a set you did not actually want.
With the Strongbox, you choose the available Artifact set you want before exchanging your unwanted 5-star pieces.
You still cannot choose the exact Artifact you receive.
The resulting piece can still have:
- The wrong slot
- The wrong main stat
- Poor substats
But at least the Artifact belongs to the selected set.
That can make Strongbox particularly useful when the set itself is your primary target.
What If You Only Need One Set From an Artifact Domain?
This is one of the most important situations to consider.
If you only care about one of the sets from a particular Domain, repeatedly farming it can feel inefficient because the other set may have little value to your account.
In that situation, ask whether the set you want is available through the Artifact Strongbox.
If it is, you may be able to spend your Resin somewhere that provides broader value and use unwanted 5-star Artifacts to obtain additional pieces from the older or specific set you need.
This does not mean you should never farm the original Domain.
If you urgently need many pieces from that set, direct Domain farming can still give you more opportunities.
But the Strongbox gives you another option instead of forcing all of your Resin into a Domain where half of the set pool may be unattractive to you.
What If Both Sets From the Domain Are Good?
Then the Domain can become much more appealing.
If both sets have meaningful uses for characters you are building, very few drops are completely wasted from a set-selection perspective.
You may receive Set A and improve one character.
Then you may receive Set B and improve another.
Even pieces with bad stats can potentially become Artifact EXP or later feed into the Strongbox.
This creates a useful farming cycle:
Spend Resin → Get Artifacts → Keep useful pieces → Recycle unwanted pieces
When both Domain sets are valuable, there is less reason to avoid the Domain purely because the Strongbox exists.
Does the Strongbox Guarantee Better Artifacts?
No.
The Artifact Strongbox does not guarantee good main stats or substats.
Selecting an Artifact set only determines which set the resulting Artifact comes from.
You are still dealing with Artifact RNG.
You may exchange three unwanted 5-star Artifacts and receive another Artifact you do not want.
That can be frustrating, but it does not necessarily mean the Strongbox was useless.
Its purpose is to give unwanted Artifacts another chance to become a useful piece from a targeted set.
It improves your ability to target a set, not your ability to guarantee a perfect Artifact.
Does Farming a Domain Give You Better Artifact Stats?
No.
You should not choose between Domain farming and Strongbox based on the idea that one method automatically gives better substats.
A bad Artifact can come from either method.
Likewise, a very strong Artifact can come from either one.
The important differences are instead:
- What resource you spend
- Which sets you can target
- Whether both Domain sets are useful
- Whether you need Artifact EXP
- What other characters or sets you are currently farming
Those factors are much more useful for deciding which method to prioritize.
Should Newer Players Farm Domains or Use the Strongbox?
Developing accounts will often rely heavily on Artifact Domains because they still need many different pieces.
If several characters need:
- Correct main stats
- Complete Artifact sets
- Better substats
- Artifact EXP
then Domain farming can provide broad progression.
Newer accounts may also have fewer unwanted 5-star Artifacts available to exchange.
And if Artifact EXP is already limited, sending every unwanted 5-star piece into the Strongbox may create another problem: you keep generating more +0 Artifacts without enough resources to level the promising ones.
That does not mean newer players should ignore the Strongbox.
It simply means they should consider whether the unwanted 5-star Artifacts are more useful as additional Artifact rolls or enhancement resources at that moment.
Should Established Players Use the Artifact Strongbox More?
Often, yes.
As an account becomes stronger, Artifact farming changes.
You may no longer be searching for basic usable pieces.
Instead, you may be searching for relatively small upgrades to already strong builds.
That means many new Artifact drops will fail to improve your characters.
Those unwanted 5-star pieces can then become additional Strongbox attempts.
Established accounts may also have specific older sets they want to improve without dedicating large amounts of Resin to their original Domains.
In those situations, Strongbox becomes a powerful way to continue searching for upgrades while spending Resin elsewhere.
Should You Farm a Domain for a Newer Set and Strongbox an Older Set?
This can be a very effective strategy when the sets you need allow it.
Imagine you need:
- A newer Artifact set that you must obtain through its Domain
- An older Artifact set that is available through the Strongbox
Instead of spending Resin separately farming both, you can potentially:
- Spend Resin farming the newer Domain.
- Keep promising pieces from that Domain.
- Identify unwanted 5-star Artifacts.
- Put appropriate unwanted +0 5-star pieces into the Strongbox.
- Select the older Artifact set you also need.
Now the same overall farming process is helping you work toward two different goals.
This can be much more efficient than thinking of Domain farming and Strongbox as competing systems.
But Should Every Bad 5-Star Artifact Go Into the Strongbox?
No.
This is important.
An unwanted 5-star Artifact can also provide Artifact EXP.
If you are constantly short on enhancement materials, using every bad 5-star Artifact in the Strongbox may not be the best choice.
You may end up with more potential Artifacts but no EXP to test them.
A simple way to think about it is:
Need more Artifact chances?
Strongbox becomes attractive.
Need more Artifact EXP?
Keep more unwanted pieces available for enhancement.
You can change the balance depending on what your account needs.
What About Failed Leveled Artifacts?
Be especially careful with Artifacts you have already enhanced.
Suppose you took an Artifact to +12, +16, or +20 and its rolls turned out poorly.
That piece contains Artifact EXP you already invested.
Using a failed leveled Artifact as enhancement material for another promising Artifact can recover part of that invested value.
If you instead use it as one of the Artifacts in a Strongbox exchange, its previous enhancement investment does not give you additional Strongbox value.
Because of that, unwanted +0 5-star Artifacts are generally much more natural Strongbox candidates than heavily leveled failed pieces.
Should You Stop Farming a Domain Once You Unlock Its Set in the Strongbox?
Not necessarily.
Strongbox availability does not automatically make the original Domain obsolete.
You may still want to farm the Domain if:
- You need many pieces from the set
- Both sets in the Domain are useful
- You have Resin available for Artifact farming
- You do not have enough unwanted 5-star Artifacts for repeated Strongbox exchanges
- You need Artifact EXP while farming
The Strongbox gives you an additional route.
It does not automatically replace direct farming.
Is It Better to Strongbox Old Artifact Sets?
Often, this can make sense.
As more Artifact sets become available through the Strongbox system, players can sometimes avoid spending Resin in older Domains that provide relatively little value outside one desired set.
Instead, Resin can be spent on Domains where multiple current characters benefit from the available sets, while unwanted 5-star Artifacts are recycled toward the older set.
The important question is not simply whether a set is old.
Ask:
What else do I gain by farming its Domain?
If the answer is “almost nothing,” Strongbox becomes much more appealing.
If both Domain sets are still valuable to your account, direct farming may remain perfectly reasonable.
Which Method Gives You More Chances at a Good Artifact?
This depends on what resources you have available.
Domain farming creates new Artifacts by spending Resin.
Strongbox creates additional Artifact attempts by consuming unwanted 5-star Artifacts.
That means you do not necessarily have to choose.
In many cases, the highest number of useful opportunities comes from using both systems together.
Farm a valuable Domain, then recycle appropriate unwanted 5-star pieces into a Strongbox set you also need.
Instead of treating a bad Domain drop as the end of that Artifact’s value, you give part of your farming results another chance.

Ask these questions before deciding where to focus:
Do I need both Artifact sets from the Domain?
If yes, farming the Domain can be highly efficient.
Do I only need one set from the Domain?
Check whether that set is available through the Strongbox.
Is the Artifact set available in the Strongbox?
If not, direct farming may be necessary if you need it now.
Do I have many unwanted +0 5-star Artifacts?
If yes, Strongbox becomes easier to use without sacrificing leveled pieces.
Am I short on Artifact EXP?
If yes, do not automatically send every unwanted Artifact into the Strongbox.
Could my Resin be spent on another Domain where both sets are useful?
If yes, farming the more valuable Domain while Strongboxing another set can be an efficient combination.
So Should You Farm Artifact Domains or Use the Strongbox?
For many players, the strongest strategy is not:
Domain OR Strongbox.
It is:
Domain AND Strongbox.
Use Resin to farm Domains that provide meaningful value to your account.
Keep the useful drops.
Then decide whether unwanted 5-star pieces are more valuable as Artifact EXP or as additional Strongbox attempts.
If another Artifact set you need is available through Mystic Offering, those unwanted pieces can give you more chances to obtain it without spending additional Resin directly on its Domain.
This creates a cycle where even unsuccessful Artifact drops can still contribute toward future upgrades.

Farm an Artifact Domain when its drops provide good overall value for your account, especially when you need both sets, need many new Artifacts, or need additional Artifact EXP.
