How Does Energy Recharge Work in Genshin Impact? Energy, Particles and Bursts Explained

Energy Recharge is one of the most important stats in Genshin Impact, but it is also one of the easiest to misunderstand.

Many players focus heavily on ATK, CRIT Rate, and CRIT DMG while ignoring Energy Recharge.

The result can be a character that looks powerful on the stat screen but cannot use their Elemental Burst consistently.

Energy Recharge does not directly reduce your Burst cooldown.

Instead, it increases the amount of Energy your character receives from Energy Particles and Orbs.

The short answer is:

Energy Recharge helps characters refill their Elemental Burst faster, but the amount you need depends on the character, team, rotation, and how much Energy the team generates.

Understanding how Energy actually works makes it much easier to build reliable teams.


Energy is the resource characters use to activate their Elemental Burst.

Each character’s Burst has an Energy Cost.

Before the Burst can be used again, two conditions generally need to be satisfied:

  • The Burst cooldown must be finished
  • The character must have enough Energy

These are separate mechanics.

A Burst can finish its cooldown while still being unavailable because the character has not recovered enough Energy.

This is where Energy generation and Energy Recharge become important.


Energy Recharge, usually shortened to ER, increases the amount of Energy a character receives from Energy Particles and Orbs.

Characters begin with a base amount of Energy Recharge, and additional ER can come from sources such as:

Higher Energy Recharge means each relevant Energy Particle or Orb restores more Energy to that character.

A character generally receives more Energy from Particles matching their own element than from Particles of a different element.

One of the most common Artifact decisions is whether to use an Energy Recharge Sands.

An ER Sands can be valuable when a character cannot otherwise meet their Energy requirement.

However, using ER as the Sands main stat means giving up another possible main stat such as:

Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on the character.

Some weapons provide Energy Recharge as their secondary stat or help with Energy through their passive effects.

These weapons can be extremely useful for Burst-dependent characters.

An ER weapon may allow you to use more offensive Artifact stats while still meeting your Energy requirement.

Do not choose an ER weapon simply because Energy Recharge is useful.

If a character’s Burst is consistently unavailable, you have several options.

  • Catching matching Particles on the correct character

Do not immediately assume the only solution is adding more ER to Artifacts.

Sometimes the team or rotation is the real problem.


You May Need More ER If

  • Your Burst is not ready for the next rotation
  • Your character spends most of the fight off-field
  • Your Burst has a high Energy Cost
  • Your team generates few matching Particles
  • Your rotation depends heavily on that Burst
  • Missing the Burst frequently disrupts the entire team

You May Have Enough ER If

  • Your Burst is consistently ready when needed
  • Your normal rotation works without waiting for Energy
  • You rarely need additional Skill uses just to recharge
  • Energy remains consistent against different enemies

You May Have Too Much ER If

  • Your Burst becomes fully charged far earlier than needed
  • You are sacrificing important offensive stats unnecessarily
  • Your character does not gain additional benefits from excess ER
  • Your rotation would remain reliable with less ER

For most players, no.

Detailed Energy calculations can be useful for highly optimized teams, but they are not necessary for normal progression.

Start with practical testing.

Use your normal rotation against an enemy that survives long enough for the rotation to complete.

If the Burst is consistently ready when needed, your Energy setup is probably sufficient.

If it is not, gradually adjust your ER, team, or rotation.

Exact optimization can come later.


Energy Recharge is not a stat you should maximize blindly.

Its purpose is to make your team consistent.

A character with slightly lower theoretical damage but enough Energy to use their Burst every rotation can outperform a build with better offensive stats that constantly waits for Energy.

Pay attention to where your Particles come from, which character catches them, whether they match the character’s element, and how often your team generates them.

Then build enough Energy Recharge to make your intended rotation reliable.

Once that requirement is satisfied, you can focus more heavily on CRIT, Elemental Mastery, ATK, HP, DEF, or whatever other stats the character needs.

The best Energy Recharge value is not the highest number you can reach. It is the amount that lets your team perform its rotation consistently.
