Adventure Rank 40–45 is one of the most important preparation stages in Genshin Impact.
Enemy difficulty continues to increase, character upgrades become more expensive, and many players begin thinking seriously about Artifacts for the first time.
However, this is also where it becomes easy to waste Original Resin.
Although 5-star Artifacts can begin appearing before AR 45, serious Artifact farming is usually better saved for the highest-level Artifact Domains unlocked at AR 45.
The short answer is simple:
At AR 40–45, strengthen your core team, finish important character and weapon ascensions, upgrade key Talents, prepare Mora and EXP materials, save most Fragile Resin, and get ready to begin serious Artifact farming at AR 45.
Here is what you should prioritize.
1. Finish Building Your Core Team First
Your main team should already be established by AR 40.
Instead of expanding into many new characters, continue strengthening the characters responsible for most of your combat performance.
Prioritize:
- Your main on-field damage dealer
- Important off-field damage dealers
- Core reaction enablers
- Your main healer or shielder
- Supports that significantly improve your team’s damage
You do not need every character at the same level.
Characters that contribute most directly to your team’s performance should receive resources first.
2. Prioritize Important Character Ascensions
Character ascension becomes increasingly valuable as you approach AR 45.
Ascensions increase your level cap and can also improve important character-specific stats.
Start collecting boss materials and regional specialties before you urgently need them.
For your most important characters, prepare:
- Boss drops
- Regional specialties
- Enemy materials
- Elemental gemstones
- Mora
- Character EXP materials
Pre-farming these resources can prevent your progression from slowing down after reaching the next Adventure Rank threshold.
3. Keep Important Weapons Upgraded
Weapon upgrades remain one of the most reliable ways to improve your characters.
Your main damage dealer’s weapon should generally receive priority, followed by weapons used by characters that contribute significant damage or important support effects.
Prioritize weapons based on how important the character is to your team rather than simply upgrading every weapon you use.
A strong 4-star weapon at a high level is usually more useful than an underleveled weapon chosen only because it has higher rarity.
4. Upgrade the Talents That Actually Matter
Talent levels become increasingly important during AR 40–45.
However, you still should not level every Talent equally.
Different characters rely on different parts of their kits.
For example:
- Some main DPS characters rely heavily on Normal Attacks
- Some characters deal most of their damage through Elemental Skills
- Burst-focused supports may care primarily about Elemental Burst levels
- Certain support abilities may provide most of a character’s team value
Identify the Talents responsible for each character’s main role and prioritize those first.
This saves Mora and Talent materials while still providing meaningful improvements.
5. Use Original Resin on Predictable Upgrades
Before AR 45, most of your Original Resin should continue going toward upgrades with predictable returns.
Good Resin targets include:
- Character ascension bosses
- Talent Domains
- Weapon ascension Domains
- Ley Line Outcrops for Mora
- Ley Line Outcrops for Character EXP
- Weekly bosses when you need their materials
These activities give you resources that directly improve your characters.
Artifact farming is much less predictable because obtaining the correct set, main stat, and substats depends heavily on RNG.
6. Avoid Heavy Artifact Farming Before AR 45
This is one of the most important progression rules during AR 40–45.
You may already obtain some 5-star Artifacts, but that does not mean you should spend large amounts of Resin farming Artifact Domains.
At AR 45, you unlock the highest-level Artifact Domains, where each run guarantees at least one 5-star Artifact.
Before then, use the best Artifacts you already have.
Focus primarily on:
- Useful main stats
- Relevant set bonuses
- Enough Energy Recharge when necessary
- Reasonable offensive or defensive stats for the character’s role
Perfect substats are not necessary.
Your goal right now is functional builds, not finished builds.
7. Save Most of Your Fragile Resin
Fragile Resin becomes especially valuable as you approach AR 45.
Because Artifact farming becomes more efficient at AR 45, saving Fragile Resin gives you the option to farm much more aggressively once the highest-level Artifact Domains become available.
You do not need to save every single Fragile Resin indefinitely.
However, spending a large stockpile shortly before AR 45 usually provides less value than waiting.
Use your normal Original Resin for regular progression and keep most Fragile Resin available for later.
8. Build a Mora Reserve
Mora expenses increase dramatically as characters become stronger.
Character levels, weapons, Talents, Artifacts, and ascensions all require Mora.
It is common for players to reach higher Adventure Ranks with plenty of upgrade materials but not enough Mora to actually use them.
If your important ascension materials are already prepared, spending some Resin on Blossoms of Wealth can be useful.
Building a Mora reserve before serious Artifact upgrading begins can prevent a major progression bottleneck later.
9. Stockpile Character EXP Materials
Character EXP requirements also increase significantly at higher levels.
You do not necessarily need to push every character to the maximum possible level immediately.
However, your core characters should have enough EXP materials available for important ascensions and level increases.
Prioritize EXP materials for characters you know you will continue using.
Avoid spending large amounts leveling characters simply because you recently obtained them.
10. Prepare for AR 45 Artifact Farming
Instead of farming Artifacts heavily before AR 45, decide what you are going to farm once you get there.
Identify:
- Which characters need better Artifacts first
- Which Artifact sets they use
- Which Domains contain those sets
- Which main stats those characters need
- Whether multiple characters can benefit from the same Domain
Domains that provide useful sets for several characters can be especially efficient.
Having a plan prevents you from spending Resin randomly once serious Artifact farming begins.
11. Do Not Chase Perfect Artifact Substats
Even after you begin obtaining 5-star Artifacts, perfect pieces are extremely rare.
Do not judge an Artifact only by whether every substat is ideal.
Early Artifact upgrades should focus on building functional sets for your important characters.
A piece with the correct main stat and a few useful substats can remain valuable for a long time.
Artifact optimization is a gradual process.
Trying to obtain perfect pieces immediately can consume enormous amounts of Resin with very little account-wide improvement.

What Changes at AR 45?
AR 45 is one of the biggest progression milestones in Genshin Impact because it unlocks the highest-level Artifact Domains.
These Domains guarantee at least one 5-star Artifact for each 20 Original Resin spent.
This makes Artifact farming significantly more efficient than it was during earlier Adventure Ranks.
However, reaching AR 45 does not mean every other form of progression should stop.
You will still need:
- Character ascension materials
- Talent materials
- Weapon materials
- Mora
- Character EXP
Artifact farming becomes an important part of your Resin spending, but it should remain balanced with the other resources your account needs.
Should You Use Fragile Resin at AR 45?
AR 45 is generally the first point where spending saved Fragile Resin on Artifact Domains becomes highly efficient.
However, you do not need to spend your entire supply immediately.
Start by improving the characters that provide the greatest benefit to your account.
A good approach is to prioritize Artifact Domains that can improve multiple members of your core teams.
This gives each Resin investment a better chance of producing something useful.
Final Advice
AR 40–45 is a preparation stage rather than a race toward perfect builds.
Your biggest goal is to arrive at AR 45 with a strong core team and enough resources to transition smoothly into serious Artifact farming.
Continue investing in guaranteed upgrades while preparing your Mora, EXP materials, ascension materials, and Fragile Resin.
Do not waste large amounts of Resin chasing perfect Artifacts early.
Once AR 45 arrives, you will be in a much better position to begin improving Artifact sets efficiently without neglecting the rest of your account.
A prepared account entering AR 45 will progress much faster than an account that spent all of its resources trying to optimize Artifacts too early.
