What Should You Farm When You Have Nothing to Build in Genshin Impact?

Reaching the point where you have no obvious character to build can feel surprisingly confusing in Genshin Impact.

Your main teams may already be leveled, their weapons and important Talents may be finished, and their Artifacts may be good enough for the content you play.

But Original Resin continues to regenerate.

So what should you farm when you do not actually need anything?

The short answer is:

If you have no immediate character-building goal, use Resin on resources that will remain useful later—such as flexible Artifact Domains, Mora, Character EXP, Talent materials, or preparation for characters you genuinely plan to build. You do not need to force yourself to farm something just because your Resin exists.

The best choice depends on whether you want to improve your current roster or prepare for future characters.

Before deciding that your account is finished, look at the characters you actually use.

Check:

  • Character levels
  • Weapon levels
  • Important Talents
  • Energy Recharge requirements
  • Artifact main stats
  • Artifact set bonuses
  • Team supports

Sometimes your main DPS looks finished while an important support is still significantly underinvested.

Improving that support may provide more team value than continuing to optimize your strongest character.

Once guaranteed upgrades are mostly complete, Artifact farming becomes one of the most obvious places to spend extra Resin.

Artifacts effectively have no true endpoint.

Even a strong build may still improve through:

  • Better substats
  • Better CRIT balance
  • More Energy Recharge
  • Better Elemental Mastery
  • A stronger Goblet or Circlet

This makes Artifact Domains a natural long-term Resin sink.

However, that does not mean you should farm a random Domain.

If you have no urgent farming goal, prioritize account-efficient Artifact Domains.

Suppose one Domain provides:

Set A — useful for several DPS characters

and

Set B — useful for several supports.

That Domain has much more potential long-term value than one where you only care about a single set for a single character.

When there is no immediate target, think about:

How many characters could potentially use these drops?

That makes unsuccessful farming less wasteful.

Unwanted 5-star Artifacts can also contribute toward another build through the Artifact Strongbox.

A useful long-term farming loop is:

Farm an efficient Domain

Keep useful pieces

Take unusable 5-star pieces

Strongbox them into another set you need

This allows one Resin investment to potentially improve multiple Artifact sets.

If your account is already developed and you have plenty of Artifact EXP, this can be particularly useful.

When you have no immediate goal, Artifact farming does not always need to target one character.

You can also build a flexible inventory.

Useful pieces may include:

  • High-CRIT Flowers and Plumes
  • Energy Recharge Sands
  • Elemental Mastery pieces
  • Elemental DMG Goblets
  • CRIT Rate Circlets
  • CRIT DMG Circlets
  • Strong HP% pieces
  • Strong DEF% pieces

A piece you do not need today may become extremely useful for a future character.

This is especially true for strong off-set Goblets and Circlets.

If you do not want to spend Resin chasing Artifact RNG, Mora is another reasonable option.

Nearly every character-building system consumes Mora.

Future characters may require it for:

  • Character leveling
  • Ascension
  • Talent upgrades
  • Weapon upgrades
  • Artifact enhancement

Unlike a character-specific boss material, Mora is universal.

That makes it a relatively safe resource to accumulate when you know you will continue building characters later.

Character EXP materials are also universal.

Hero’s Wit does not become useless because your plans change.

If you intended to build Character A but later decide to build Character B instead, the EXP materials can simply be used on Character B.

That makes EXP Ley Lines relatively low-risk when you genuinely have no immediate progression target.

However, there is still no need to accumulate an enormous supply without a reason.

Talent materials can be useful to pre-farm, but they are less universal than Mora or Character EXP.

Different characters require different Talent book series.

If you know which characters you are likely to build, farming their books in advance can save time.

But if you have no idea who you will build next, randomly accumulating Talent books is less efficient.

Prioritize Talent materials when you have a reasonably clear future use for them.

The same principle applies to weapon materials.

If you have:

  • A weapon you plan to level
  • A weapon likely to be used by several characters
  • A future build already planned

then farming its materials in advance can make sense.

But farming random weapon materials simply because their Domain is available is unnecessary.

Unlike Mora and Character EXP, these resources are tied to particular weapon groups.

If you know which character you want next, pre-farming can turn otherwise unused Resin into future progress.

You might prepare:

  • Mora
  • Character EXP
  • Talent materials
  • Weapon materials
  • Ascension materials

However, be careful with character-specific materials when information is uncertain.

If the character has not been released and their requirements are not officially confirmed, your farming plans could change.

Universal resources are safer when there is uncertainty.

World boss materials are usually character-specific.

If none of the characters you plan to build require a particular boss, there is little reason to spend Resin there just because you have nothing else to farm.

Compare that with Mora.

Even if your future plans change, Mora remains useful.

The boss material may sit unused indefinitely.

When you have no immediate goal, flexible resources are usually safer than highly specific ones.

Weekly Bosses are slightly different because some of their rewards are difficult to obtain elsewhere.

If you still need:

  • Talent materials
  • Dream Solvent
  • Weapon Billets

your discounted weekly claims can remain worthwhile.

But a developed account does not need to claim rewards from every Weekly Boss simply to spend Resin.

Choose bosses whose rewards still have realistic value for your roster.

One common endgame trap is spending months trying to improve an already strong main DPS while ignoring weaker teammates.

Suppose your main DPS has:

  • Correct set
  • Correct main stats
  • Strong substats
  • Leveled weapon
  • Important Talents finished

Meanwhile, an off-field teammate still has poor Artifacts and low Talents.

Improving the teammate may produce a much larger increase in actual team performance.

When you think you have nothing to build, check the whole team.

You do not always need to invest further into your existing teams.

Another option is increasing the flexibility of your roster.

Consider characters that provide:

  • A new Element
  • Different reaction teams
  • Grouping
  • Healing
  • Shields
  • Off-field application
  • Alternative damage types

A character does not need to replace your strongest DPS to be worth building.

They may simply allow you to handle different enemies or team requirements more comfortably.

Not every Resin decision needs to maximize theoretical account efficiency.

Once your account can comfortably complete the content you care about, you have much more freedom.

Maybe there is a character you enjoy but never built because they were not part of your strongest team.

This is an excellent stage to invest in them.

The purpose of efficient farming is eventually to give yourself more freedom, not to permanently restrict yourself to the most efficient choices.

No.

Artifact farming offers potentially unlimited improvement, but the results are unpredictable.

Suppose you already have very strong Artifacts.

You could spend several days farming without obtaining a single upgrade.

The same Resin spent on Mora or Character EXP creates guaranteed resources that can support the next character you build.

Neither choice is universally better.

Ask whether you currently value:

possible improvement now

or

guaranteed flexibility later.

Then your Resin suddenly has a purpose.

Instead of continuing random Artifact farming, begin preparing the resources that are confirmed and useful.

Start with safer resources such as:

  • Mora
  • Character EXP
  • Confirmed Talent materials
  • Confirmed weapon materials

Then move toward more character-specific materials once you are confident they will be needed.

This can allow you to build the character much faster after obtaining them.

Then there is little reason to keep stockpiling them.

If you already have enough universal resources to build several characters, your Resin may provide more value elsewhere.

Possible options include:

  • Artifact optimization
  • Building neglected characters
  • Preparing specific Talent materials
  • Improving secondary teams
  • Farming confirmed future materials

The best farming target changes as your inventory changes.

Once an account is highly developed, the difference between two reasonable Resin choices becomes less important.

For example:

20 Resin → Artifact Domain

and

20 Resin → Mora Ley Line

may both be perfectly sensible depending on your future plans.

You do not need to calculate which option provides the maximum theoretical account value every time you log in.

If all important upgrades are already finished, you have earned some flexibility.

Ideally, avoid leaving Original Resin capped for long periods if you still care about maximizing progression.

But reaching the cap occasionally is not a disaster.

Resin is a resource designed to support your gameplay.

You do not need to rearrange your life simply to prevent a small amount of Resin regeneration from being lost.

If you have time to log in but not enough time to farm, Condensed Resin can also help with eligible activities.

If you genuinely have no urgent upgrades, a useful general priority is:

Strong Long-Term Options

  • Efficient Artifact Domains
  • Artifact sets useful to multiple characters
  • Mora
  • Character EXP

Good With a Future Plan

  • Talent materials
  • Weapon ascension materials
  • Confirmed character materials
  • Specific Artifact sets

Check Before Spending Resin

  • Weekly Boss rewards
  • Underbuilt supports
  • Secondary teams
  • Characters that provide new team options

Usually Avoid Without a Reason

  • Random world bosses
  • Character-specific materials with no planned user
  • Huge amounts of resources you already have
  • Inefficient Artifact Domains for tiny upgrades

If you log in and have no idea where to spend your Resin, ask:

Do any characters I use still have important guaranteed upgrades?

If yes → finish them.

Is an important support underbuilt?

If yes → improve them.

Do I know which character I want to build next?

If yes → prepare for them.

Do I need more universal resources?

If yes → Mora or Character EXP.

Are my resources already comfortable?

If yes → farm an efficient Artifact Domain.

That is usually enough to make the decision.

Original Resin naturally regenerates and stops regenerating when it reaches the cap.

So simply leaving it capped for weeks does not allow you to accumulate unlimited Resin for later.

If you want to prepare for future farming, Fragile Resin is the resource that can be saved without stopping natural Resin regeneration.

We will cover whether you should use or save Fragile Resin separately later in this Farming series.

For most developed accounts, the best choices are:

Improve weaker teammates, farm efficient Artifact Domains, or accumulate flexible resources that future characters can use.

You do not need to invent a character-specific farming goal just to spend Resin.

When there is no urgent upgrade, flexibility becomes valuable.

Mora can be used by anyone.

Character EXP can be used by anyone.

Strong Artifacts may be useful for many current or future characters.

These resources rarely lock you into one specific plan.

Having nothing urgent to farm is not a progression problem.

It usually means your account has reached a point where you can choose what you want to improve instead of constantly fixing immediate weaknesses.

First check your supports and secondary characters for meaningful upgrades.

If your teams are already developed, decide between improving Artifacts and preparing flexible resources for the future.

And if you already have plenty of everything, build a character you simply enjoy playing.

When your account no longer tells you what you must farm, your own future plans should decide what you farm next.
