The Treasure Compass is one of the most useful exploration Gadgets in Genshin Impact.
Once you unlock one, it can help you find nearby treasure that would otherwise be easy to miss. Current Treasure Compasses can even detect certain exploration clues in addition to ordinary chests.
But can you rely on the Treasure Compass to find every chest in a region?
No.
The Treasure Compass can find many chests, but it cannot guarantee that you have discovered every chest or every chest-producing activity in an area.
The biggest reason is simple:
Some chests do not exist in the world until you do something that makes them appear.
Understanding that limitation can save you a lot of confusion when trying to finish an area.
What Can the Treasure Compass Find?
A standard Treasure Compass can detect nearby treasure that is already available as a detectable target.
Depending on the target and your exploration progress, current Treasure Compass functionality can help locate:
- Treasure Chests
- certain Mora Chests
- Time Trial Challenges
- Seelie
- Monetoo
When it detects a chest, the chest can be marked on your map.
For certain treasure-related clues, the Compass can instead display a flag marker.
This makes modern Treasure Compasses more useful than they were in earlier versions of Genshin Impact.
However, that still does not mean the Compass reveals everything that can eventually reward a chest.
Why Can’t the Treasure Compass Find Every Chest?
Because some chests have not spawned yet.
This is the most important limitation of the Gadget.
There is a major difference between:
a chest that already exists but is hidden
and:
a chest that will only appear after you complete an action.
The Treasure Compass can detect many chests in the first category.
The second category is where problems begin.
If the chest does not exist yet, there may be no chest for the Compass to detect.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Puzzle Chests?
It depends on the puzzle.
Suppose a chest already exists in the world but is inaccessible until you solve something.
The Compass may still be able to detect that chest.
But suppose the puzzle works like this:
Solve puzzle
↓
Chest spawns
In that situation, the final chest may not be detectable before the puzzle is completed.
That means:
Compass finds nothing
does not necessarily mean:
there is no chest associated with this area.
You may still need to discover and complete the puzzle first.
Which Puzzle Chests Can the Treasure Compass Miss?
Treasure Compasses generally cannot directly detect chests that only spawn after completing certain actions.
Examples can include chests created after:
- activating Elemental Monuments
- lighting certain torches
- completing environmental puzzles
- popping certain Anemo Slimes or Bloatty Floatties
- harvesting particular groups of carrots
- digging at specific locations
- defeating enemies
- completing certain Seelie-related interactions
The exact mechanics vary between individual chests.
The important rule is:
If completing the activity causes the chest to spawn afterward, the Compass may have nothing to detect beforehand.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Hidden Chests?
Yes — some of them.
A chest does not have to be plainly visible on your screen for the Compass to detect it.
For example, the Compass can detect certain existing chests that are:
- behind Rock Piles
- wrapped in brambles
- encased in stone
- inside Shrines of Depths
- otherwise visually concealed
So saying:
“The Treasure Compass cannot find hidden chests”
would be too broad.
A better way to understand it is:
The Compass can find many hidden chests if those chests already exist as detectable objects.
The problem is usually not whether you can see the chest.
The problem is whether the chest has spawned yet.
Hidden Chest vs Unspawned Chest
This distinction explains a lot of Treasure Compass confusion.
Hidden but already spawned
The chest already exists.
Something may simply prevent you from seeing or reaching it easily.
The Treasure Compass may detect it.
Not spawned yet
There is currently no chest.
You must first complete an action that creates it.
The Compass generally cannot detect the future chest before that happens.
So two chests can both feel “hidden” to the player while behaving completely differently with the Treasure Compass.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Buried Chests?
Not all of them.
If you need to interact with a specific location and choose something like Dig before the chest appears, the final chest may not yet exist as a detectable target.
That means the Compass may not reveal it beforehand.
This is a good example of why manually observing the environment can still matter even when you have a Treasure Compass equipped.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Chests From Defeating Enemies?
Not necessarily.
Some chests already exist while enemies are guarding them.
Those are different from situations where:
Enemies appear
↓
You defeat them
↓
A new chest spawns
If the chest only appears after the enemies are defeated, the Compass generally cannot detect that future chest before it exists.
So enemy encounters can still hide unexplored rewards even when your Compass is not detecting a chest.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Chests Behind Rock Piles?
Yes, it can detect certain chests that already exist behind Rock Piles.
This is an important exception because it demonstrates that:
hidden from view ≠ undetectable.
If the chest already exists behind the obstacle, the Compass may still find it.
But there is another type of Rock Pile interaction where breaking the pile causes enemies or another event to occur and the chest only spawns afterward.
That situation can behave differently.
Again, what matters is whether the chest already exists.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Shrine of Depths Chests?
Yes.
The chest inside a Shrine of Depths already exists even if you have not opened the Shrine.
Because of that, a Treasure Compass can detect a chest locked inside a Shrine of Depths.
This can occasionally lead to a confusing result where the Compass directs you toward treasure that you cannot immediately collect because you still need the appropriate Shrine key.
The Compass detects the chest.
It does not check whether you currently meet every requirement needed to reach or open it.
Can the Treasure Compass Find Quest-Locked Chests?
Sometimes.
A chest may already exist in an area that you cannot access until you progress further through a quest.
The Compass can detect certain existing chests in inaccessible locations.
So if your Compass detects treasure but you cannot figure out how to reach it, consider whether the chest might be:
- behind a quest-locked entrance
- underground
- inside a cave
- in another vertical layer
- accessible from a different route
The Compass finding a chest does not guarantee that you can immediately walk directly to it.
Does the Treasure Compass Find Seelie?
Current Treasure Compass functionality can detect nearby Seelie as treasure-related clues.
This is one area where older information about the Gadget can be misleading.
The Compass has received exploration improvements over time, so an old guide saying it cannot help with Seelie may no longer accurately describe the current system.
When the Compass identifies certain non-chest exploration clues, it can mark them with a flag rather than the normal chest icon.
Does the Treasure Compass Find Time Trial Challenges?
Yes.
Current Treasure Compasses can also identify nearby Time Trial Challenges.
This matters because completing a Time Trial can lead to treasure even though the final reward is not simply an ordinary chest waiting in the open.
Again, this is why the current Compass is more capable than older versions of the Gadget.
But these improvements still do not make it a universal detector for every puzzle or hidden interaction in the game.
Does the Treasure Compass Find Monetoo?
Yes.
In regions where Monetoo are relevant, current Treasure Compass functionality can detect them as treasure-related clues.
Like Seelie and Time Trials, these can be marked differently from direct chest detections.
So when using a Treasure Compass, pay attention to what kind of marker appears.
A flag can be telling you:
“There is something here that can lead you toward treasure.”
It does not necessarily mean a chest is already sitting at the marker.
Does the Treasure Compass Find Mora Chests?
Current Treasure Compass functionality can also help with certain Mora Chests after the area’s Exploration Progress reaches the required threshold.
This functionality was expanded in later updates.
That is another reason current Treasure Compass information should not be based entirely on older guides.
The Gadget has become considerably better at helping players clean up remaining exploration content.
Can the Treasure Compass Detect Something Outside Your Current View?
Yes.
The chest does not have to be visible on your screen.
The Compass searches within its detection area and can direct you toward an applicable target.
That target may be:
- behind terrain
- above you
- below you
- inside another part of a cave
- behind an obstacle
Genshin Impact’s increasingly vertical environments make this especially important.
A map marker that looks extremely close horizontally may actually be on a completely different elevation.
Does the Treasure Compass Search the Entire Region?
No.
Using the Compass once does not scan all of Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan, or another applicable region.
Standard Treasure Compasses have a limited detection area.
This means:
No treasure detected
does not mean:
No detectable chests exist anywhere in the region.
You still need to move around and use the Compass from different locations.
This is one reason systematically traveling through unexplored areas works much better than standing at one Teleport Waypoint and repeatedly pressing the Gadget.
Why Does the Compass Find Nothing Even Though You Know a Chest Is Left?
There are several possibilities.
The remaining chest may:
- be outside your current detection range
- not have spawned yet
- require a puzzle first
- require enemies to be defeated
- require a hidden interaction
- require additional quest progress
- be associated with exploration content the Compass does not directly reveal
So a failed Compass search does not prove the chest does not exist.
If this is the specific problem you are experiencing, see Why Isn’t the Treasure Compass Finding Any Chests in Genshin Impact?
Does the Treasure Compass Mark Every Nearby Chest at Once?
No.
Standard Treasure Compass functionality marks one applicable target at a time.
If several detectable chests or clues are nearby, you may need to clear them one by one.
A useful pattern is:
Use Compass
↓
Follow marker
↓
Open chest or complete the clue
↓
Use Compass again
↓
Follow the next result
This makes the Treasure Compass very effective for cleaning up an area, but it is not the same as revealing every remaining chest on your map simultaneously.
Does a Treasure Compass Replace an Interactive Map?
Not completely.
A Treasure Compass is often more convenient because it works directly inside the game and does not require you to compare your world against hundreds of external markers.
For ordinary exploration cleanup, it can be extremely useful.
But an interactive map or detailed exploration guide can still help when you are looking for things such as:
- unusual hidden interactions
- puzzles that create chests
- buried chest triggers
- obscure exploration objectives
- specific chest requirements
So the two tools solve slightly different problems.
The Treasure Compass tells you about detectable nearby targets.
A complete external map can document where every known exploration interaction is supposed to occur, including ones that the Compass cannot simply reveal.
Can You Finish Exploring a Region Using Only the Treasure Compass?
You can find a large amount of remaining treasure with it.
But if by “finish” you mean:
find literally every chest and every hidden exploration interaction
then you should not assume the Treasure Compass alone can guarantee that.
You can reach a point where the Compass repeatedly finds nothing while undiscovered content still exists.
At that stage, you may need to search for:
- remaining puzzles
- unusual environmental interactions
- hidden triggers
- buried treasure
- unexplored underground areas
- quest-dependent areas
The Compass is a powerful cleanup tool.
It is not a complete checklist of everything in the region.
Does 100% Exploration Mean the Treasure Compass Found Everything?
No.
These are separate concepts.
A region displaying 100% Exploration Progress should not be interpreted as proof that every individual chest has been collected.
Likewise, the Treasure Compass finding nothing nearby does not prove that every possible exploration reward has been obtained.
This distinction becomes especially important for players trying to completely clear a region rather than simply reach the displayed 100%.
Should You Stop Searching When the Treasure Compass Finds Nothing?
That depends on your goal.
If you simply want to explore casually and collect most available treasure, the Compass is usually more than enough to help clean up an area.
But if your goal is:
every chest
then a failed Compass search should not automatically be your stopping point.
Instead, consider whether the remaining content could involve something the Compass cannot directly detect.
The closer you get to complete exploration, the more likely the missing content may involve unusual conditions rather than an ordinary chest sitting in the open.
What the Treasure Compass Can and Cannot Find
| Exploration Target | Can the Compass Help? |
|---|---|
| Existing ordinary chest | Yes |
| Existing chest hidden from view | Often yes |
| Chest behind Rock Piles | Yes, if the chest already exists |
| Chest wrapped in brambles | Yes |
| Chest encased in stone | Yes |
| Shrine of Depths chest | Yes |
| Certain quest-inaccessible existing chests | Yes |
| Seelie | Yes, current functionality |
| Time Trial Challenge | Yes, current functionality |
| Monetoo | Yes, current functionality |
| Chest that spawns only after a puzzle | Generally no before it spawns |
| Chest that spawns after defeating enemies | Generally no before it spawns |
| Buried chest that appears after a Dig interaction | Generally no before it spawns |
| Every hidden exploration interaction | No |
| Every chest in an entire region from one use | No |
So, Does the Treasure Compass Find Every Chest in Genshin Impact?
No.
The Treasure Compass can find a large number of chests and, after several updates, can also help locate certain treasure-related clues such as Seelie and Time Trial Challenges.
But it cannot guarantee that you have found every chest.
The most important limitation is that some chests only spawn after you complete another action.
If the chest does not exist yet, the Treasure Compass generally cannot detect the final chest beforehand.
So the best way to think about the Gadget is:
The Treasure Compass helps find nearby detectable treasure.
Not:
The Treasure Compass reveals every possible chest in the region.
That is why you can use the Compass thoroughly, get no more results, and still have puzzles, hidden interactions, or other undiscovered treasure left to find.
