Why Am I Still Getting Staggered With Interruption Resistance in Genshin Impact?

Your character’s Skill, Burst, passive, or Constellation says that it increases resistance to interruption.

You activate it, start attacking—and an enemy still knocks you backward or interrupts your combo.

So is the Interruption Resistance not working?

Not necessarily. Interruption Resistance does not always make a character completely immune to stagger or knockback. In many cases, it reduces the Poise Damage your character takes. If enough Poise Damage still accumulates, your character can eventually be staggered.

The important distinction is:

Interruption Resistance ≠ automatic interruption immunity.

Understanding the hidden Poise system explains why your character can still be interrupted even while an Interruption Resistance effect is active.


Interruption Resistance helps your character resist being staggered by enemy attacks.

Behind the scenes, Genshin Impact uses a hidden mechanic commonly called Poise.

Characters have an invisible Poise Bar.

Enemy attacks can deal Poise Damage in addition to their normal HP damage.

If enough Poise Damage is taken and the character becomes poise-broken, attacks can stagger or interrupt the character.

Interruption Resistance generally reduces the amount of Poise Damage your character takes.

So instead of thinking:

Interruption Resistance = enemies cannot interrupt me

it is usually better to think:

Because your character can still take Poise Damage.

Imagine, purely as a simplified example, that your character can withstand a certain amount of Poise Damage before being staggered.

Without Interruption Resistance:

Enemy attack → large amount of Poise Damage

With Interruption Resistance:

Enemy attack → reduced Poise Damage

The second situation is better.

But reduced does not necessarily mean zero.

If enemies continue attacking and enough Poise Damage accumulates, your character may still reach the point where their Poise breaks.

A partially depleted Poise Bar can recover over time.

This means the timing of enemy attacks matters.

Imagine two situations.

Several attacks land before your Poise has enough time to recover.

Poise Damage accumulates quickly.

You may become staggered.

There is more time between attacks.

Some Poise can recover before the next hit arrives.

You may remain uninterrupted longer.

This helps explain why a character can feel extremely resistant against one enemy but much easier to stagger when surrounded by several enemies attacking rapidly. The underlying Poise system includes both a Poise Bar and refill behavior.


Because multiple enemies can deliver Poise Damage in quick succession.

Even if your Interruption Resistance reduces every individual hit, several attacks arriving close together can still drain your Poise.

The character can eventually become poise-broken.

This is one reason Interruption Resistance may feel excellent against isolated attacks but less reliable when surrounded.

Usually because several hidden factors are changing at once.

Usually, getting staggered does not by itself prove that the effect is bugged.

Before assuming something is wrong, check:

  • Was the Interruption Resistance effect still active?
  • Did several enemies hit you rapidly?
  • Did a particularly strong attack hit you?
  • Had you already taken several hits?
  • Did a temporary Skill or Burst protection window end?
  • Did your shield break?
  • Were you expecting resistance to behave like complete immunity?

If your character consistently behaves differently from the ability’s intended mechanics under controlled conditions, then there may be something else worth investigating.

But simply being interrupted while an ordinary Interruption Resistance effect is active can be completely normal.

The easiest way to remember it is:

Interruption Resistance makes you harder to stagger.

Interruption immunity makes you unable to be staggered during the applicable state.

Those are not always the same thing.
