You apply Hydro, Pyro, Electro, Cryo, or Dendro to an enemy, but the elemental icon disappears much sooner than you expected.
Sometimes it seems to remain for several attacks. Other times, one reaction appears to remove it almost immediately.
So why does an Elemental Aura disappear so quickly in Genshin Impact?
An Elemental Aura has a limited amount of elemental gauge. That gauge naturally decreases over time and can also be consumed by Elemental Reactions. Once the remaining gauge reaches zero, the aura disappears.
How quickly this happens depends on several factors, including the strength of the original Elemental Application and what reactions occur afterward.
What Is an Elemental Aura?
When certain elements are applied to an enemy, they can remain on that target as an Elemental Aura.
For example, if you apply Hydro to an enemy and Hydro remains on the target, another element can interact with that Hydro aura to trigger a reaction.
You can think of the visible elemental icon as showing that an underlying elemental gauge still exists.
But that gauge is not permanent.
It can be reduced in two major ways:
- It naturally decays over time.
- Elemental Reactions can consume it.
Once no usable gauge remains, the aura disappears.

Do Elemental Auras Disappear Naturally?
Yes.
Even if you do nothing after applying an element, most normal Elemental Auras eventually disappear on their own.
This happens because the elemental gauge decays over time.
So if you apply Hydro to an enemy and then stop attacking, you may eventually see the Hydro icon disappear without another element ever touching it.
That does not mean the application failed.
The aura simply reached the end of its duration.
How Long Does an Elemental Aura Last?
There is no single duration that applies to every Elemental Aura.
The duration depends partly on the Gauge Units of the Elemental Application that created it.
For common applications, useful examples are:

So a 1U application and a 2U application do not create identical auras.
This is one reason two abilities that both appear to apply the same element can leave that element on an enemy for different amounts of time.

Why Does 1U Become 0.8U?
When an elemental attack creates an aura, the applied gauge normally receives what is commonly called Aura Tax.
Aura application uses a 0.8× modifier.
So:
1U application → 0.8U initial aura
and:
2U application → 1.6U initial aura
This does not mean the game randomly removed part of your element.
It is simply part of how the underlying aura system is calculated.
You do not need to calculate Aura Tax during normal gameplay, but it helps explain why the amount of aura actually sitting on an enemy is not always identical to the listed Gauge Unit of the attack that applied it.
Why Can an Aura Disappear Before Its Normal Duration Ends?
Because time is not the only thing that removes an aura.
Elemental Reactions can consume elemental gauge.
Suppose an enemy currently has an elemental aura and you hit it with another element.
If those elements react, the triggering application can consume part of the existing aura.
If some gauge remains:
The aura stays.
If the reaction consumes all of the remaining gauge:
The aura disappears.
So an aura with a theoretical duration of several more seconds can still vanish immediately after a reaction.
The reaction used up the remaining gauge before natural decay did.
Why Does an Aura Sometimes Survive a Reaction?
Because a reaction does not necessarily consume the entire aura.
Imagine an enemy has an elemental aura with some gauge remaining.
You trigger a reaction.
There are two possible general outcomes:
Reaction consumes all remaining gauge
→ The aura disappears.
Reaction consumes only part of the remaining gauge
→ The aura remains.
That remaining element can potentially participate in another reaction.
This is why seeing a reaction occur does not automatically mean the original element must disappear.

Why Does the Same Aura Sometimes Disappear Faster?
Because the amount of gauge present when you trigger the reaction may not always be the same.
Suppose you apply an aura and immediately trigger a reaction.
A relatively large portion of its original gauge may still remain.
Now imagine you wait several seconds before triggering the same reaction.
During those seconds, natural decay has already reduced the aura.
The reaction is therefore interacting with less remaining gauge.
That can change whether the aura survives afterward.
This creates situations where the same sequence of elements can appear to behave differently simply because the timing was different.
Does Waiting Before a Reaction Matter?
Yes.
Because an aura continuously loses gauge through natural decay, waiting changes how much gauge is available when the next element arrives.
Conceptually:
Apply element
↓
Aura begins decaying
↓
Wait
↓
Less gauge remains
↓
Trigger reaction
The longer you wait, the less gauge may remain for the reaction to consume.
So when testing Elemental Reactions, timing can matter even when the characters and attacks are otherwise identical.
Does a Stronger Elemental Application Always Last Longer?
A stronger initial application can create an aura with a longer base duration, but the full system is more complicated than:
more U = proportionally more seconds.
For example:
- 1U has a base aura duration of 9.5 seconds.
- 2U has a base aura duration of 12 seconds.
So 2U is twice the Gauge Unit value, but its base duration is not twice 9.5 seconds.
There are also additional rules involving refreshing existing auras and decay-rate inheritance.
For most elements, applying the same element again can interact with the existing aura’s gauge and decay rate rather than simply starting an entirely independent aura from scratch. Pyro has an exception to the normal decay-rate inheritance behavior.
For ordinary gameplay, you do not need to memorize all of those calculations.
The important point is:
Aura strength and aura duration are related, but not through a simple “2U lasts twice as long as 1U” rule.
Does Applying the Same Element Again Refresh the Aura?
It can maintain or strengthen the existing aura, but you should not think of repeated applications as simply stacking separate auras together.
For example, applying another instance of the same element does not mean:
1U + 1U + 1U = permanent 3U aura
The game has rules governing how an existing aura is updated, including its remaining gauge and decay behavior.
This is why repeatedly applying an element can help maintain an aura without producing an endlessly growing elemental gauge.
Can Internal Cooldown Make an Aura Seem to Disappear Faster?
Indirectly, yes.
Internal Cooldown (ICD) and aura decay are different mechanics.
Aura decay determines how an existing aura loses gauge over time.
ICD can determine whether repeated hits actually apply another instance of an element.
This creates an important situation.
You may see:
Hit → Hit → Hit
and assume all three hits refreshed the elemental aura.
But if only one of those hits actually applied the element because of the attack’s application rules, the later hits may deal elemental damage without refreshing or reapplying the aura.
Meanwhile, the existing aura continues to decay.
Eventually it disappears.
So it can look as though:
“I’m still attacking with Hydro. Why did Hydro disappear?”

Does Elemental Damage Always Refresh an Aura?
No.
This follows directly from the ICD distinction.
An attack can deal elemental damage without necessarily applying a fresh element on that particular hit.
So seeing a blue, red, purple, or other elemental damage number does not by itself prove that the enemy’s aura was refreshed.
What matters is whether that hit actually performed Elemental Application.
This distinction becomes especially important with characters whose abilities hit very rapidly.
Why Does Vaporize Sometimes Remove an Aura but Sometimes Leave It?
Vaporize is an especially useful example because the direction of the reaction matters.
Hydro triggering Vaporize on Pyro and Pyro triggering Vaporize on Hydro do not consume the existing aura in exactly the same way.
That means you can encounter situations where:
Vaporize occurs and the aura disappears
while in another setup:
Vaporize occurs and some aura remains.
The strength of the applications and the amount of gauge remaining also matter.
This behavior is important for teams that want to preserve an aura for repeated reactions.

Can Multiple Characters Accidentally Remove the Aura You Wanted?
Yes.
This is one reason Elemental Application matters when building reaction teams.
Suppose your team wants Hydro to remain on an enemy so a particular character can trigger Vaporize.
Other teammates may also apply:
- Pyro
- Electro
- Cryo
- Dendro
- Anemo
- Geo
Those interactions can change the elemental state of the target.
So when the desired aura suddenly disappears, the problem may not be the character you are currently controlling.
Another teammate’s Skill, Burst, coordinated attack, summon, or other effect may have interacted with the aura first.
This is why complicated teams can produce very different elemental behavior from testing one character alone.
Why Does an Aura Disappear Immediately After I Switch Characters?
Character switching itself does not normally erase an enemy’s aura.
What often happens is that something else occurs around the same time.
For example:
- An off-field ability hits the enemy.
- A reaction consumes the remaining gauge.
- The aura naturally reaches zero.
- The incoming character applies another element.
- A coordinated attack activates.
Because combat happens quickly, it can appear that switching characters caused the aura to disappear when the actual cause was another elemental interaction.
Can an Aura Disappear Even If I Don’t Trigger a Reaction?
Yes.
Natural decay alone can remove it.
If no reaction occurs, the underlying gauge continues decreasing until it reaches zero.
Once that happens, the elemental icon disappears.
So there are two basic questions to ask when an aura disappears unexpectedly:
Did enough time pass for the aura to decay?
or:
Did another elemental application consume it through a reaction?
In many cases, one of those explains the behavior.
Why Do Some Enemies Keep an Element Much Longer?
Not every elemental status you encounter behaves like an ordinary temporary aura created by your character.
Some enemies can have innate or persistent elemental states.
For example, certain elemental enemies are naturally associated with an element rather than relying on the same temporary aura you would create by hitting an ordinary enemy.
That means you should not use an elemental enemy as your only reference for how long a normal applied aura should last.
A temporary aura on a regular enemy and an innate elemental state are not necessarily the same thing.
Do You Need to Calculate Aura Decay During Normal Combat?
Usually, no.
You do not need a stopwatch or Gauge Unit calculator for ordinary exploration, quests, or most combat.
Understanding the concept is more useful than memorizing every formula.
If an aura disappears unexpectedly, remember:
- Auras naturally decay.
- Reactions consume gauge.
- Stronger and weaker applications can behave differently.
- Waiting before reacting means less gauge may remain.
- Not every elemental-damage hit necessarily reapplies the element.
- Other teammates can alter or consume the aura.
- Some reactions consume aura differently from others.
