You added more Elemental Mastery to your character, but the damage number barely changed—or did not seem to change at all.
Does that mean Elemental Mastery is not working?
Usually, no.
The most common reason is that Elemental Mastery does not directly increase all of your character’s damage. It primarily affects Elemental Reactions, and its value depends heavily on which character triggers the reaction and what type of reaction occurs.
The short answer is:
If increasing Elemental Mastery is not increasing the damage you expected, check whether the character is actually triggering a reaction that benefits from EM—and make sure you are looking at the reaction damage rather than unrelated direct damage.
Several different mechanics can make additional EM appear ineffective.
1. Elemental Mastery Does Not Increase All Elemental Damage
This is one of the most common misunderstandings about Elemental Mastery.
Elemental Mastery is not the same thing as an Elemental DMG Bonus.
For example, suppose a Pyro character deals a Pyro attack without triggering an Elemental Reaction.
Increasing that character’s EM does not simply make the Pyro attack stronger because it deals Elemental damage.
The same applies to other Elements.
A character having:
more Elemental Mastery
does not automatically mean:
more damage on every Elemental attack
EM becomes relevant through reactions and other mechanics that specifically use it.
So if you are testing EM by attacking an enemy without triggering a reaction, you may see little or no difference in the number you are watching.
2. You May Be Building EM on the Wrong Character
Elemental Reactions generally use the relevant stats of the character who triggers the reaction.
Consider a simple example:
- Hydro is already applied to an enemy.
- A Pyro character attacks.
- Vaporize occurs.
The Pyro character triggered that Vaporize.
Therefore, the Pyro character’s Elemental Mastery is relevant to that reaction.
Increasing the Hydro character’s EM does not increase that particular Vaporize simply because the Hydro character provided the original aura.
This is called reaction ownership, and misunderstanding it can make EM appear completely ineffective.
Before adding more EM, ask:
Which character is actually triggering the reaction?

3. The Character Applying the First Element May Not Need EM for That Reaction
This is closely related to reaction ownership.
Players sometimes assume that both characters involved in a reaction contribute their Elemental Mastery.
That is not generally how it works.
Suppose:
Character A applies Hydro
and then:
Character B applies Pyro and triggers Vaporize
Character A helped make the reaction possible, but Character B triggered it.
That means increasing Character A’s EM does not increase Character B’s Vaporize damage.
So a character can be extremely important to a reaction team while still gaining little benefit from EM for a particular reaction they do not own.
4. You May Be Looking at Direct Damage Instead of Reaction Damage
One attack can involve more than one damage component.
This becomes especially important with Transformative Reactions.
For example, an Electro attack may:
- Deal the character’s own Electro damage.
- Trigger Hyperbloom.
- Cause separate Hyperbloom reaction damage.
Increasing EM can substantially increase the Hyperbloom portion while leaving the character’s own Electro attack largely unchanged.
If you only watch the Electro damage number, you might conclude:
“My EM didn’t increase my damage.”
But the reaction damage may have increased separately.
Whenever you test Elemental Mastery, make sure you know which damage number EM is supposed to affect.
5. Hyperbloom Uses the EM of the Hyperbloom Trigger
Hyperbloom is an especially common source of confusion.
Hydro and Dendro first create a Dendro Core.
Then Electro hits the Core and triggers Hyperbloom.
In a typical situation, the Electro character who triggers Hyperbloom determines the relevant Elemental Mastery and level for that reaction.
That means adding more EM to the Hydro or Dendro character does not automatically increase the resulting Hyperbloom damage.
You can therefore add hundreds of EM to a character and see no improvement to Hyperbloom if that character is not actually triggering it.

6. Not Every Reaction Uses Elemental Mastery in the Same Way
Even when EM is working correctly, different reactions respond to it differently.
This is important because players sometimes expect every reaction to behave like Hyperbloom or Swirl.
Vaporize and Melt
These reactions amplify the attack that triggers them.
Elemental Mastery increases the reaction bonus, but the original attack still depends on the character’s normal offensive stats.
That means ATK, CRIT, DMG Bonus, EM, and other relevant factors can all matter.
Aggravate and Spread
These reactions add damage to qualifying attacks.
EM increases the reaction-related contribution, while the attack can still benefit from other offensive stats.
Hyperbloom, Burgeon, Swirl, and Other Transformative Reactions
These reactions have separate reaction damage that benefits strongly from the triggering character’s level and EM.
Because these reaction types work differently, the same amount of Elemental Mastery can have very different practical value in different teams.
7. Your Character May Not Be Triggering Reactions Consistently
A character can appear to be the reaction trigger without actually owning every reaction.
Elemental application order can change during combat.
Different abilities may apply Elements at different times, and multiple characters may contribute off-field application.
As a result, the character you built with high EM may trigger some reactions but not others.
For example, if your high-EM character only triggers half of the important reactions while another teammate triggers the rest, increasing that character’s EM will only benefit the reactions they actually own.
This can make the overall improvement smaller than expected.
8. An Off-Field Character Can Still Be the Reaction Trigger
Being off-field does not prevent a character from triggering reactions.
Suppose an Electro character uses an ability and then leaves the field.
Later, that off-field ability hits a Dendro Core and triggers Hyperbloom.
The Electro character still owns that Hyperbloom.
The character currently on-field does not automatically become the reaction trigger.
So when troubleshooting EM, do not ask only:
“Who was on-field?”
Ask:
“Whose ability actually triggered the reaction?”
9. More EM May Be Working, but the Increase Can Look Smaller Than Expected
Elemental Mastery has diminishing relative returns.
This does not mean EM suddenly stops working after a certain number.
Instead, additional EM becomes progressively less impressive relative to the amount you already have.
For example, adding 100 EM to a character with almost no EM may represent a much more noticeable relative improvement than adding another 100 EM to a character that already has a very large amount.
So if your character already has high EM, another increase may be working correctly even if the difference is less dramatic than expected.

10. You May Have Sacrificed Another Important Stat
Adding Elemental Mastery usually comes with an opportunity cost.
For example, changing Artifacts to gain more EM may reduce:
- ATK
- CRIT Rate
- CRIT DMG
- Energy Recharge
- Elemental DMG Bonus
- HP or DEF for characters whose damage scales from those stats
Suppose a Vaporize damage dealer gains more EM but loses substantial ATK and CRIT.
Their Vaporize multiplier may improve, but the attack being multiplied may become weaker.
The final damage increase can therefore be much smaller than expected—or the overall build can even become worse.
This is why comparing builds using only the EM number can be misleading.

11. Your Energy Recharge May Be Too Low
Elemental Mastery can improve reaction damage, but it cannot compensate for a rotation that no longer works.
If you replace Energy Recharge with EM and your character can no longer use their Elemental Burst consistently, your overall team damage may decrease even though individual reactions become stronger.
For Burst-dependent characters, having enough Energy Recharge to perform the intended rotation can be more important than gaining additional EM.
So when an EM-heavy build performs worse than expected, check whether you sacrificed too much Energy Recharge.
12. Your Character May Already Receive EM From Other Sources
The EM shown by your build outside combat may not represent the full amount available during combat.
Elemental Mastery can come from:
- Character abilities
- Weapons
- Artifact effects
- Team buffs
- Elemental Resonance
- Other temporary effects
If your character already receives significant EM during combat, adding more through Artifacts may produce a smaller relative improvement than expected.
This does not mean the additional EM is broken.
It simply means you are adding it to an already high total.
13. Your Character’s Main Damage May Not Come From Reactions
Some characters participate in reaction teams while still dealing most of their damage through their own Talents.
Simply being used in a team that triggers reactions does not mean EM automatically becomes the character’s most important stat.
A character may apply an Element, enable another teammate, or occasionally trigger reactions while still gaining much more from conventional offensive stats.
This is why team type alone is not enough.
Instead of asking:
“Does this team use reactions?”
ask:
“How much of this character’s own contribution actually benefits from EM?”
14. How Should You Test Whether Elemental Mastery Is Working?
If you want to compare EM accurately, try to keep the test conditions as consistent as possible.
Use:
- The same character
- The same enemy
- The same enemy level
- The same reaction
- The same reaction trigger
- The same buffs and debuffs
- The same relevant attack
- The same team conditions
Then change the EM value and compare the appropriate reaction damage.
If the trigger changes between tests, or different buffs become active, the comparison may no longer tell you what EM actually changed.
For attacks that can CRIT, differing CRIT results can also make comparisons harder.
Controlled testing is much more useful than simply changing an Artifact and watching random combat numbers.
Elemental Mastery Troubleshooting Checklist
If increasing EM does not seem to increase your damage, check:
- Are you actually triggering an Elemental Reaction?
- Does that reaction benefit from Elemental Mastery?
- Is the character with more EM actually triggering it?
- Are you looking at reaction damage rather than unrelated direct damage?
- Did reaction ownership change?
- Are multiple characters triggering the same type of reaction?
- Did you lose ATK, CRIT, Energy Recharge, or another important stat?
- Does your team already provide substantial EM?
- Are you comparing the same enemy and combat conditions?
- Is your character’s main damage actually reaction-based?
One of these usually explains why the expected improvement is missing.
So, Why Isn’t Elemental Mastery Increasing Your Damage?
In most cases, Elemental Mastery is working—the problem is what damage you expect it to increase.
Remember:
- EM does not directly increase all Elemental damage.
- Reaction ownership determines whose EM is relevant.
- The character applying the first Element is not automatically the reaction trigger.
- Hyperbloom uses the stats of the character that actually triggers Hyperbloom.
- Direct attack damage and reaction damage can appear as separate numbers.
- Different reaction types use EM differently.
- More EM can have smaller relative returns when you already have a lot.
- Sacrificing important stats for EM can reduce your overall performance.
So if adding Elemental Mastery seems to do nothing, don’t immediately assume the stat is useless.
First identify which reaction is occurring, who is triggering it, and which damage number you are actually measuring.
That will usually reveal what is happening.
