You defeat a boss for a character’s Ascension Materials, spend your Original Resin, and then notice a problem: the boss did not give you enough of the elemental gemstones your character needs.
In some cases, the boss may even drop gemstones of a different element.
This can make it seem like you are farming the wrong boss, but that is not necessarily the case.
If a boss is dropping the correct character-specific Ascension Material but not enough of the elemental gemstone you need, you usually do not need to switch bosses just for the gemstones. You can obtain additional gems from other sources or convert gemstones of another element using Dust of Azoth.
Why Didn’t the Boss Drop the Gem You Need?
Character Ascension generally requires two different types of boss-related materials:
- A character-specific Ascension Material
- An elemental gemstone such as Agnidus Agate, Varunada Lazurite, Vajrada Amethyst, or another elemental gem series
These do not always line up perfectly.
Some bosses can reward gemstones from more than one element, which means defeating the correct boss does not necessarily guarantee that every gemstone drop will match the character you are building.
There is also another common problem: you may simply run out of gemstones before you collect enough of the character-specific boss material.
So seeing the wrong gem—or not getting enough of the right one—does not automatically mean you made a mistake.
First, Check That You’re Farming the Correct Boss
Before spending more Resin, check the character’s Ascension requirements.
The most important thing is whether the boss drops the character-specific material required by that character.
If it does, you are generally farming the correct boss.
For example, if your character requires a particular boss-exclusive material and you are receiving that material after each fight, do not assume you should change bosses simply because your elemental gemstone supply is falling behind.
The two resources can be handled separately.
What Should You Do If You Need More Ascension Gems?
If you are short on the correct elemental gemstone, you have several options.
The most useful solution depends on what else your account currently needs.
Convert Other Gems With Dust of Azoth
One of the easiest solutions is to convert elemental gemstones you do not currently need.
At a Crafting Bench, Dust of Azoth allows you to change a character Ascension gemstone from one element into an equivalent gemstone of another element.
For example, if you have excess Cryo gemstones but need Pyro gemstones, you can convert the Cryo gems rather than farming another boss solely for Pyro gems.
This is especially useful when you already have plenty of gemstones belonging to elements you are not currently using.
However, you should not automatically convert your entire supply.
Those gemstones may eventually be needed for another character.
Should You Farm Another Boss Just for the Correct Gem?
Usually, not unless you also need something else from that boss.
Suppose your character needs:
- More Pyro gemstones
- A character-specific material from Boss A
But Boss B can also give you Pyro gemstones.
Farming Boss B only for the gemstones may solve one problem, but it also means spending Original Resin on a boss-specific material you may not need.
Meanwhile, you still have to return to Boss A to finish the character’s other Ascension requirement.
That can make your Resin less efficient.
If you can convert excess gemstones instead, continuing to farm the boss that provides the character-specific material will often make more sense.
When Does Farming Another Boss Make Sense?
There are exceptions.
Farming another boss for gemstones can be reasonable if:
- Another character you plan to build also needs that boss’s unique material.
- You have very few spare gemstones available for conversion.
- You do not want to spend Dust of Azoth.
- You already finished farming the current character’s boss-specific material but still need gemstones.
- The Resin spent on the other boss will contribute to another character you intend to build.
This changes the calculation because the boss-specific drops are no longer being wasted.
For example, if Character A needs Pyro gemstones and Character B needs materials from another boss that also rewards Pyro gemstones, farming the second boss can help both characters at the same time.
What If You Have Smaller Gem Pieces?
You may already have more Ascension Gems than it first appears.
Character Ascension gemstones come in several tiers:
Sliver → Fragment → Chunk → Gemstone
Lower-tier pieces can be combined at a Crafting Bench to create higher-tier versions.
So before spending Resin on another boss, check your inventory for Slivers, Fragments, and Chunks of the element you need.
A collection of smaller pieces may be enough to craft the higher-tier gemstone required for the next Ascension.
Should You Convert Gems or Keep Farming Bosses?
A useful way to decide is to look at what is actually blocking the character.
If you still need the character’s boss-specific Ascension Material:
Keep farming that boss and deal with the gemstone shortage separately.
If you have excess gemstones of another element:
Consider converting them with Dust of Azoth.
If you have finished the boss-specific materials and are still missing gemstones:
Check your smaller gem pieces and conversion options before spending Resin solely for more gems.
And if another boss provides useful materials for a second character while also giving you the element you need, farming that boss can become worthwhile.
The goal is not simply to obtain gemstones. It is to avoid spending Resin on boss drops that have no use for your account.
Is Dust of Azoth Worth Using for Ascension Gems?
It can be, particularly when gemstone RNG is the only thing preventing an Ascension.
Dust of Azoth exists specifically to let you convert elemental Character Ascension Materials into another element.
That means you do not necessarily have to keep fighting bosses and hoping for the correct elemental drops.
The decision becomes more complicated if your Dust of Azoth supply is low or the gemstones you would convert are likely to be needed soon.

Don’t Convert Every Unused Gem You Have
It can be tempting to convert a large pile of gemstones as soon as you start building a new character.
Usually, there is no reason to do that.
Convert only what you actually need for the next Ascension.
This leaves more flexibility if you decide to build a character of another element later.
For example, converting every Hydro gemstone into Pyro gemstones may solve today’s shortage but create another shortage when you start building a Hydro character.
A small, targeted conversion is generally safer than converting your entire inventory at once.
What If This Keeps Happening?
If you regularly run short on one element while accumulating large amounts of another, that does not necessarily mean you are farming incorrectly.
Your character choices affect your gemstone inventory.
If you build several characters of the same element in a short period, that element’s gemstones can disappear quickly. Meanwhile, gemstones belonging to elements you rarely build may accumulate.
Over time, this can create very uneven inventories.
That’s one of the situations where gemstone conversion becomes particularly useful.

If a boss doesn’t drop the Ascension Gem you need, don’t immediately start farming a different boss.
First check whether you are already fighting the boss that provides your character’s required boss-specific Ascension Material.
If you are, continue farming the material you actually need and then check:
- Whether you can craft higher-tier gems from smaller pieces
- Whether you have excess gemstones of another element
- Whether converting them with Dust of Azoth makes sense
- Whether another useful boss can provide the element without wasting its other drops
The important distinction is that the correct boss-specific material and the correct elemental gemstone do not always arrive at the same rate.
